Virgin Media to include FREE 0870 as part of your free call package from 1st August

Virgin Media is changing the way it charges for 0870 call. These can be very costly and push up your phone bill.

This change will be from the 1st of August.

Calls to all numbers begining 0870 will be free as part of your call package, so calls to your banks, businesses and helplines that begin 0870 won't cost you a penny, when you make them during the inclusive period in your call package.

The only down side is that the line rental is going up to £13.90 but if you call a lot of the 0870 numbers you should say lots.

Most numbers are 0844/0845 for me though - are they including these too?

With 0870 numbers you can normally find an alternative on saynoto0870. But things like my gp have moved to 0844 and there is nothing you can do about it

I'm irritated with Virgin prices going up all the time - think it might be time to move back to sky....

All are 0871 or 0845 etc now mostly, so whats the point in that....

Fear not Sky have been merrily jacking prices as well

Maybe if the 0906 numbers were free I'd be tempted!

I'd rather they kept the rental lower. So many increases in the past year!

Looks like it is just the 0870,01,02,03 number that are included in the call packages.

I can just see the room, table full of jumped up little pratts thinking up ways of extracting ever more money out of the customer base.

A growing scandal/revenue source is the 13.5p 'connection' charge, couple this with the so called 'line rental' @ £14 and the 8.5p/minute/part minute and you have a very expensive short phone calls.
It works out extremely expensive well when you call and an answer service cuts in, minimum 22p for a couple of seconds! It's as cheap on my PAYG mobile!

But hey ho, according to my letter It’s good news as my 0870 numbers are included for free at weekends.

I'd quit Virgin if there was any choice around here but we are too far from the exchange to use the alternatives.

Jerks.

Me too, why so many increases? Surely they cant blame that on the cost of oil/ fuel or grain prices?

Maybe Virgin are using bandwaggons to ferry their engineers around in now.

My letter from Virgin said 0845 and 0870 would be included, but limited to 250 minutes per month. You need to register for it on their website.

I'll second that. I used to get alot of charges for calls I never made (seemed to have calmed abit now) but my partner rings and hangs up occasionally - literally less than a ring, this costs 27p each and every time. I have the xl package and get free unlimited calls to landlines, etc. but this costs a fortune without even actually connecting.

Mind you I have noticed that despite having the XL package, I am being chaged for landline calls on occasions still (used to be very bad).

VM is more expensive than BT with all call charges (UK & International), plus charge a fortune for third party services (i.e. Dialaround service is 0.5p per minute to the EU via BT, and 4.8p per minute via Virgin). Read the T&C before you sign up.

Also with Virgin, hate we are getting so many little bumps recently. Really thinking about moving away. Doesn't help that I have to have TV in my package despite me not even having it connected nor a TV licence. I get told if I remove TV I will have to pay more.

I am a little confused on other services, they say I need an active BT line - Does that mean I have to be paying the BT line rental AND Sky or just an actual line, no need to have BOTH a BT contract and a Sky ?.

Just means you'll pay line rental to Sky as well as the normal costs, and that if you're moving from Virgin for example, you'll need to have your phone line reenabled to work via BT, which they're doing for free at the moment anyway.

Just use your mobile to direct dial instead :

Also, another way is to go the company's website and see if there is a number which says "if calling from abroad dial xxxxx "

Oh, the irony. From the Virgin Media site:

if you add the anytime/evening and weekend bundle im sure you don't have to pay the connection charge. we added the unlimited bundle which saved us about £15 a month net.

Yes, I'm aware s123, however we're on the basic deal as we don't use the phone enough to justify the extra £96 a year for the unlimited package. Anyone like yourselves that can save from the deal gets a bargain but for such as us, using the phone infrequently the price per call is very expensive.

I like to remove the landine but the Virgin price structure is set so that any saving gained is clawed back on broadband and tv charges.

Hahah very good

Virgin charge for making 0844 and 03 calls. I have 250 minutes of 0845/0870 package extra, but was only aware of the 0844 charges yesterday when i phoned them and they said they are not included in package.

He did tell to look for alternative 0844 number on say no to 0870 website.. duhh I already know that!

but this is rip off as many companies and banks have started using 0844.

If I have understood their new price plan correctly, calls to mobiles are also free from 1st August if you are on the phone evening / weekend / 24/7 package

Does this include Virgin media nationals customers ?
