Virgin Train Wifi

Found 10th Sep 2012
Not sure if this is the right place to put this, or even if anyone will find this useful.

You are able to get free wifi on virgin trains in first class, but you have to pay in standard. However if you log on to the wifi while by the first class carrage you are able to use the wifi for free in the standard class.

Nice find, may work on the other rip off train companies that do free wifi in some parts and not others of the train.

Can't see how this would be voted cold, considering if you were crazy enough to pay for the wifi i think it is like £5 for half an hour or an hour!!

Good trick! Will try next time.

Tried to do this yesterday, wouldn't seem to work. Still had to pay to get access. Was right by first class, I even walked to first class to see if there was a different signal - nope.

@willww did you try it before the train had started to move, or whilst stationery at the starting station? I'm not sure the wifi starts until the train has started the scheduled service.

I tried it on saturday, I was there early so got my seat then i walked down the outside of the train and connected to the wifi while standing outside the 1st class carrage, it connected straight away.

Went back to my seat which was at the other end of the carrage next to 1st claass and worked for the whole journey. Hope that helps

Great, I normally buy the anytime 30 day pass, this would save a bit if it works

good tip

Do this all time, thought it was only me though :P

Thanks - was on the train today and thought it was crud that they wanted me to pay.... I love playing first class chicken anyway... pulling the "I am a stupid girl and heres my boobs" if I get caught; totally works.

also, top tip!... if you chase a train in your car, and stay close enough, you can bag free wifi and not even pay them a penny!

COLD! So, OP, in the entire 15 years Virgin has been running the trains, you just found out ?

Well done zahidworld you must be proud of yourself.

jayjay not sure that would work mate, probably can’t get close enough plus it would cost quite a bit in petrol..

I've done this before and it often works a treat, other times its extremely poor. Slightly hit and miss but voted hot all the same!

Ha - good one, but don't they get a bit suss with passengers hovering in the 1st class carriage with their laptops, then disappearing again?

Yeah maybe, i was only using it on my phone so didn't look too bad.

There's a huge chance this will work for East Midlands Trains too. I coded the free wifi for EMT 2 years back, they use the same system/service as Virgin, a company called N0- -Mad (spaces added as to not link this thread to them).

If this does not work download an app for your mac if you have one (guessing they have this for windows too) that will allow you to extend your free 15min window over and over (15min free and then again, and again etc etc) by changing your MAC address as its seems the 15min free is based upon your MAC address...

ipconfig /renew will renew your dhcp lease, it'll do nothing with your MAC address...

It is however relatively straightforward to change/spoof your MAC address - google it along with whichever OS you are using.
