I've had two very different results from two visits to Specsavers, and after spending a fortune on prescription Raybans.. turns out my latest results are nowhere near accurate. The guy was more interested in getting me out of the door to purchase more glasses (or at least a set of lenses)

honeststeveo

Thanks bullwinker. If I print this will they accept it or is it better to just show on smartphone?

It was in Nov in 2016, so maybe regulation might have changed since..? What happened was, I had free eye test at Boots and no prescription given and I didn't think/ask of it as I didn't think to purchases glasses etc anytime soon. Then i discovered about Glasses Direct so i wanted use them which requires a prescription to submit. so I went to Boots and said that I had eye test there and want the prescription (to the receptionist) then I was told No because I haven't purchased glasses there :| So I said to the receptionist that "I bought my current glasses from next door (Vision Express), do you think they'll give me prescription?" And she said Yes. Well, glad to hear now Boots give you prescription. I like then as In my experience their eye check was thorough.

panda098

Sorry I'm outside and haven't read the all comment above yet but does it apply to contact lense purchase?? (Just wondered as if eye test for contact lenses is slightly different to regular eye test)

littel.helper

Strange. i just had free eye test done at Boots and i was given Preconception without asking for it.

zlain

It is illegal to do this. What probably happened is they refused to give the prescription unless you paid for the test. The vision express "free" eye tests usually have a condition that they are only free provided you buy spectacles, otherwise the test is £20 or whatever.

panda098

It seems like common practice. (Does anyone know why? :/ ) When I had free Boots eye test in Nov 2016 they said they can't give me prescription. So I went to Vision Express which was literally next door where I purchased my glasses (nerd) some years ago. And they gave me a copy of prescription no problem.

No free eye test ivoucher in the email here also.

bobzuruncle

Just booked my appointment online, confirmation email contains no free eye test. Has this offer expired?

joethepope

Today's VE visit was eventful, mid test the optometrist left the room to get clarification of their own promo and upon her return there was an instantaneous lack of customer service. Not so much vision more express.

fleischyy

That's what the AIO were quoting a few years ago, all the places I've worked at have been around £175ish per hour (I'm a London optom)

reddragon105

It's a scary thought but I know a few people who have had it done and they all say it's the best thing they've ever done and they only wish they'd done it sooner. My left eye is almost 20 vision without glasses but my right eye is incredibly long sighted (+2.50), so even with glasses there's this weird feeling of imbalance, like I'm only using my left eye for everything, so the plan is just get my right eye lasered - it'll be cheaper and, if anyone does go wrong, at least it can't be much worse than it already is. If it can be improved to the level of my left eye I'll be happy - if it's even better, I'll consider having the left eye done as well (unless it's strongly advised to just have both eyes done at the same time).

Do they still do free eye tests

Roastinboyz

So you do the actual eye test inside the van? Or do they just hand you a leaflet?

TobletoDanillio

I can confirm they do the retinal photography for free. I have just booked an appointment and it was at the end it tells you it's free. Heat added

Deadpooled

Actually, way too much jerking off is known to cause blindness.

Kassim93

All three normally take the retinal photos. But normally don't but the drops in unless we need to. So unless your pupils are tiny or something is seen that could be suspicious, you can get a good view of your eye with just the photos and the optician having a look.

You can use eye and vision exercises, they're on the internet. There's also some useful vision training apps like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eyeexamtest.eyecareplus I didn't use much vision training, I just gradually wore glasses and lenses less over time, then not at all. I think keeping healthy, eating well and managing stress are also important. It took a long time for my eyes to adjust. When I consider how long it took my eyes to accommodate wearing glasses and lenses, it's taken a similar length of time to reverse the process.

BeerMeister

I'm pretty sure the fact that these are free doesn't change the quality of the exam. You get good and bad in everything, I suspect you were just unlucky.

Qman

Tesco dont charge for eye tests at any time.

bigpappa

Your better off paying £25 for a thorough eye test with a non locum optician. Locum optician are either paid a day rate or per test and they are not bothered with referral etc if something is picked up. Find a good local optician and you will find they are cheaper and better. Specsavers is a cattle market and unfortunately others are following their MO. If you care about your eyesight spend £25-30. If you have no issues with your eyesight you don't need to go back every 2 years.

DealJourno

I pay my independent optician £25 for a very extensive 45 minute eye examination. Makes a massive difference to the experiences I had with the 10 minute highstreet checkups. I suppose it depends how much you think your eyes are worth.

Don't bother going to the Westfield Shepherd's Bush branch - They are more concerned on selling premium glasses that don't suit you and delaying the process of providing your prescription slip. You will know who the guys who work there are, they walk around Westfield with aviator shades on (this is an indoors shopping mall). Don't forget, most companies offer free eye tests via their VDU scheme as part of standard employee benefits.

Just to warn anyone considering "Select Specs"'. I've had a very bad experience with Select Specs. I ordered some glasses for my son while he is away at university. They replied a week later to say they could not supply to his prescription. They had let me select his prescription online?? Then when i ordered some form yself it did not ask me for the delivery address and when the order confirmation came through they were going to send them to my son! I emiled then multiple times but they still ended up sending the specs to my son. They dont have a phone number! Now have to wait until Christmas to get them.........
