Vitasia 400ml can Coconut Milk (82%) 59p!! from 6 to 12 June at Lidl

Found 1st Jun 2013
This coconut milk is already very good value at its usual price of 89p, being 82%. Some brands of coconut milk are as low as 30%. So at 59p, this really is a steal! It's available as one of Lidl's special offers from Thursday 6th June to Wednesday 12 June.

Nice find OP, we use a LOT of coconut milk and 59p is a good price.

We use a lot as well, usually go for the Maggi coconut milk powder 1kg pack ( around £7 at local asian shops). lasts for a couple of months, much cheaper.

I don't see why not.

Thanks, heat added.

I shall be stocking up on this.

This is a great price - cheaper than the specialist korean supermarket by a long shot - and they are cheap.

Sorry for my ignorance, but why is coconut milk so great? what are its main uses?

I'd rather drink breast milk, it's free and nutritious and succulent.

Its essential in most thai dishes. I use often for green curry

I also use Maggi powder, can choose whether u want milk or cream then. Great stuff with minimal extras

@therealslimkaty - many thanks for post #3, the percentages do vary enormously and your chart is *most* helpful.

This is a must in Thai cooking.

That's fine as long as you are not Lactose intolerant and are happy with stuff that doesn't normally appear in liquid coconut milk.

Here's what Maggi say is in their dried powder but there is no indication of percentages...

Coconut Milk Solids,
Maltodextrin
Milk Protein (Sodium Caseinate)
Sodium Phosphate (Mineral Salt (E339iii))

I shall stick to the liquids.

FYI Aldi's are 81% (as I remember) and 89p. Next time I'm there I'll check the full ingredients as I'll probably get some - they were already good value, and now I realise the high coconut extract that's even better

Aroy D is the best coconut milk out there from Thailand....but costs about a £1 a tin....59p for this brand seems like a bargain....

Anyone know if this product contains anything else besides coconut and water?

Can you believe the Tesco £2 a tin low quality coconut milk? I walked out in disgust!
Anyway - I LOVE cooking with coconut milk - thanks for this!

Beef rendang is the best :-)

Very high in cholesterol folks.

Be warned.

Mainly used in Asian, Caribbean and Oriental cooking. Can also be used for baking, cakes and desserts as well.

Anyone got a really nice recipe to follow? I love a good Thai meal. Heat added.

Coconut milk - 82%. What's in the 18%?

Not surprising really, Tesco's whole ethos is to offer the lowest possible quality food at near Marks and Spencer prices.

clostridium_botulinum

Largely water, with stabiliser and the like, just as mentioned in the list above.

I'll research it for you if you can tell me what's in the other 81% of this Tesco 'Meat' pie. oO

....Which links nicely back to my last post^

Very high in cholesterol folks. Be warned.

Indeed it's high in cholesterol **but** we need cholesterol to be healthy **plus** there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol and far too much of the literature on this subject ignore both of those facts.

It's just the same when you go to the doctor to have your cholesterol levels checked, all they have checked is the level of cholesterol, not the amount of good and the amount of bad. This makes the results potentially unhelpful.

Wow that's a ridiculous concentration! The best I found was Tesco own brand at 67% (or thereabouts!). Hottttt!

Flipping hot, no idea why ASDA sell theirs for nearly £2 but it is a rip off. I will be dropping by to stock up, thanks for heads up OP.

Good price and heat for adding such useful information. Use a lot of coconut milk - have found a couple of brands with good quality price ratios. Will update the list later.

btw - lidl in peckham are selling vitasia's Sweet and sour chicken meal at BOGOF - one pound something per can - don't know if it's store-specific.

This should be fine for lactose intolerant people as it doesn't state that it contains Milk sugar (Lactose)

Well pointed out though as this could potentially kills a milk allergy sufferer like myself, which is why I can spend hours reading ingredients as i am fine with lactose, and the ingredients change quite frequently.

PS Thank to the OP hot from me.

Many thanks op

It's delicious and tastes quite a lot like raw coconut, only creamier, and without the bits that get stuck between your teeth.

Appreciate what you are saying with regard to the Lactose but would suggest that it might be more the case of it being present in low enough levels not to rate a place on the ingredients list? How would that be likely to directly affect someone who is Lactose intolerant?

%coconut extract isn't necessariy the be all and end all I should think... water is used in the extraction process so it's hard to know what it means in this context.. %fat is probably also an indicator of how good the process is.. but still doesnt give a clue as to the actual quality of the coconut in the first place...

Never done it before but it's pretty easy to make your own.. you take the pulp of a coconut add HOT water and blend, then run it through muslim gauze or similar to remove the flesh...
