Hopefully iPad owners may find it extremely useful

VLC for iPAD is freely available on app store...now you can play your mkv, avi and other video files easily without pain of converting!

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework, that plays most multimedias files and various streaming protocols.

It is simple to use, yet very powerful and extendable.

VLC has all codecs built-in. It comes with support for nearly all codec there is. And what is more it can even play back the file or media if it is damaged! Missing or broken pieces are no stop to VLC, it plays all the video and audio information that's still intact.

What about for the iphone?

hahaha applefanboys getting exited over VLC player!

in the real world VLC has worked for everyone else since 2001

VLC is awful

Is there anything for Android based phones form VLC ?

Asura

VLC is awful

Why?

I use it on my pc and it plays everything ive tried .

Not confrontational just would like your opinion

VLC is probably the best video player out there as far as compatability goes. Major coo for the ipad there. I hope vlc release something for android if they haven't already.

What's your point? There was no iPad in 2001. Before 2010, 'applefanboys' as you call them were happy with VLC as its multi-platform and works with macs.

my point? to get so excited over something so basic as vlc player must mean the hardware the apple ipad (which i have used, see recent posts) isnt good enough
hence the need for fanboys to ignore the basics

Looking forward to the much talked about iPhone version of VLC.

It does play most things, but it's not very good. Get CCCP instead

Agreed! CCCP and media player classic handle 1080p files much better than VLC!

I prefer the K-Lite Codec Pack that includes Media Player Classic.
I use a variety of media players and VLC is one of the best. Its one of the quickest and lightest player available.

It allows the iPad to play more video formats and stops the need for mp4 conversion. Nothing to do with any hardware limitations it may or may not have.....

Installing K-Lite Codec Pack is like installing aids onto your computer. MPC & CCCP all the way.

Any chance it will work on 1st Gen Ipod Touches?

The things that get posted in freebies these days is getting ridiculous and then it gets heat as well.

The app is free forever no deal to be found and there's thousands of other free apps available too please don't post them all here there are sites dedicated to this sort of thing all ready.

I prefer this to the endless cinema screening posts that are always full, and random free for a day bloated rubbish software.

"Imdave" - I completely agree with you!

i love Windows and all but before Windows 7 came out, an install of WIndows out the box would struggle to play even a DVD sometimes. VLC just makes it work with little interface and system useage.
BEsides those who mock the iPad are missing out on one of the best things to be made.

What a load of tosh - there is absolutely nothing wrong with posts to make users of this site aware of
something they might want to take advantage of whether it is a deal or a freebie. You talk like someone who knows everything about everything so if you do why bother using this site at all !!!

You also sound like someone who knows every free app out there - thats pretty sad in itself - get a life and stop moaning - if you dont like helpful users reminding us whats out there then crawl back under your stone!!

If we take your line then why bother having this site - as everyone should be out there finding their own deals and freebies not looking here for help.

Time of the month Bob? - You talk like someone who is very emotional... about everything, if your going to get so upset reading comments where people express there opinions that will differ from your own why bother at all !!! - Touché

As for "pretty sad" "stop moaning" "get a life" - re read what you wrote then take your own advice. - hypocrite.

p.s
Have a great day x

How does this work? Can you only stream videos online? Or is there some way of transferring files to the iPad? I don't see the point of this if you can't transfer the files that actually need VLC, why not use the built in video player?

VLC has gone down in my books since they don't (wont?) support hardware acceleration!

Its basically just increasing the amount of video formats that will play without you having to convert them into the compatible format. So you could transfer the flash videos you got off youtube, mkv files, m2ts, ts, avi etc.

VLC has supported hardware acceleration for some time now, since June 2010.
