  • UK data, minutes and textsAn allowance to use data, call standard UK mobiles and landlines (starting 01, 02 or 03), and standard texts to UK mobiles – when using your mobile in the UK. You can also make calls to 08 and 118 numbers, but these aren’t included in your plan, so please remember that they are subject to an additional charge. You can find more information on this in the Additional Charges table.
  • Network Satisfaction GuaranteeWe’re the only network to guarantee your satisfaction. Whether you’re a new or existing customer, if you’re not happy with your experience, just tell us.
  • Data cappingThe data cap is designed to prevent you from running up extra costs once you’ve reached your monthly data limit. To make it easy for you to keep track of the data you’re using, we’ll text you when you’ve used up most of your data, and again when you’ve reached your allowance. Then your data cap kicks in to stop you from using any more. Need more data? Check out all the options by logging in online or heading to the My Vodafone app.
  • UK planVodafone Basics plans are for use in the UK. Roaming is unavailable on all Vodafone Basics SIMs as standard. Only emergency calls are available abroad.

UK only! As i said if they don't offer roaming then it doesn't matter about 'free' roaming. Most basic plans like three essentials will become UK only in the future! So then you'll pay for roaming via the monthly payment.

Hmm I would rather get Vodafone 5GB data and 500 minutes for £7 using cashback sites like mobiles.co.uk or e2save. They also have option of 8GB data and unlimited minutes for £9. I've bought EE sim last year from e2save and they are great with cashback; always on time. Plus you can possibly get £10 as well from Quidco.

Over at mobiles.co.uk you can get 8gb for £9 - this also included EU roaming which this does not.

Also has 5gb for £7 which again has roaming but only 500mins.
how can they block calling in the EU when its the law?

The law is they can't charge extra for roaming, but they don't have to offer roaming.

No, see above post.
No roaming, no premium sms/call services, no mms. It really is a no frills offer and can only be taken out via the website, don't try calling up and going into store in which to signup, they will direct you to the website.

Would expect that to be blanket, you offer it or you don’t - you can’t exclude EU from some customers but allow it for others. Maybe Ofcom complainttime HUKDers!

Its only a requirement if they offer roaming! This is what hapens when regulators interfere with markets they do not understand. Unentended consequences.

Yes I do wonder if all networks will steer in this direction, and it'll get to a point where only the top tariffs will offer roaming.

Three essentials perhaps? Sometimes some things should be left alone. If you roam you pay uk price but if you call europe from here you pay £1.50 a minute. Its utter madnes good old eu.

Good to have this info to hand, as I'm shortly due to dance the merry dance that is calling Vodafone to get a new 'deal' for another year. Some concrete "hey, you've currently got these offers available online" always useful ammunition.

Currently I'm on 5GB, 500 mins, unlimited texts £10.20 a month. A bit pants now as prices have fallen across the board since I grabbed that last year, but still ok. The £9 a month for 8GB would be good, but needs to include roaming. We'll see ;-)
Guys all UK SIMs be they contract or PAYG regardless of network allows you to roam at no extra cost unless you go over what is stipulated. EU Digital Single Market
You lost me at Vodafone
Thanks OP
After my e2save deal ended in the summer I said I was quitting and they offered me unlimited texts+calls +5gb for 8 quid a month. With roaming etc. Not the best deal on the world but I only use about 3gb, so fine for me.
My contract was due for renewal today....ended up with the following as part of the deal..

My vodafone broadband reduced to £19.00 a month for 76mbs fibre (was 24.00)
1 month free broadband
£35.00 credit to my account.
£21.00 a month for 50 GB mobile data , unlimited mins / text :- red package choice of spotify / now tv etc.
1 month free mobile

which in my mind works out at £21 * 12 = £252 minus the following.

broadband discount = £60
1 x free broadband = £19
£35 credit
1 x free mobile = £21
comes to :- £135 worth of discounts

so £252 - £135 divided by 12 = £9.75 a month for 50 GB with unlimited minutes and texts.....

Not a bad offering....not sure when I will use all the data , but hey , I will not be running out anytime soon.

I think it’s mad anyone would question the EUs meddling which got us free roaming!

Its mad to think that a few years ago we had to pay a fortune for using data and mins abroad...

amazing now now go on hols and forget that we’re roaming just use minutes internet etc to our hearts content !!!
This seems a big con :

Freefone numbers starting 0800, 0808 Free
Freefone numbers starting 0500 55p a call

Wrong.

From the exact same webpage, my bolding...

Every existing or new contract that includes roaming services will change to "roam like at home" contract.

If the contract does not include roaming services then there is no EU requirement to have free EU roaming.
Lack of roaming abroad doesn’t bother me in the slightest. At best I can afford a holiday abroad once every two years and have no interest in calling or texting anyone back home whilst I’m away. For me a holiday is about getting away from your normal life not taking it with you.

If you want to stay in touch with people back home get on the hotel/apartment/local bar free wifi and do it that way using social media
For anyone thinking about going on avoidafone don't.Absolute useless outfit who shouldnt be allowed to run a business.Worst customer service and poor coverage .Just check out root metrics website for facts and ofcom for results. The reason their so cheap is because their losing customers hand over fist. Not to mention how quick they are to mess people's credit ratings up due to mistakes by themselves.

Where does it mention EU roaming? Also what is the deal with the "Red Entertainment Plans" - does everyone get it and how does it work - is it paid? Thanks a lot.
Thanks OP purchased two SIMs one on the £8 a month and one on the £10 a month. Do you know if mobile tethering is allowed in this deal?

Yes, roaming (by it's very name) is an extra service - if they provide it in the EEA, it has to be inclusive.
The roaming is only option that I'd miss, who uses MMS these days anyway?

I wonder if Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE (4G calling) work as standard.

But it’s not a extra service if V plans allowances can be used by a EU Directive around Europe/EEA they are inclusive, “ roaming” would be outside that zone where applicable charges would be.

MMS is free on Voxi

Being ‘basic’ probably not, 30 day sims don’t even include m Wifi Calling it’s blocked at network level unless you commit to a 12m sim.

Social media: hi everyone here’s me on a beach in Spain = “hi criminals just to let you know I’m on holiday thousands of miles away and my house is unattended”

Get a payg and buy bundles that you can then use in Europe - don’t advertise on social media your absence from Home on holiday.

Three payg All in One bundles have loads of countries outside Europe included roaming for £15+ -a small investment
