Nowadays it is much cheaper to get an IP camera and watch/listen to your baby instead of just listening. cold from me as cameras provide a better experience at a lower price.

I was also thinking the same thing, have you got any suggestions for an IP camera?

on a negative side for IP camera, if I intend to use my phone as the monitor then it won't be always on. Compared to a walkie talkie style monitor thats always on passively.

i have recently got the xiaomi mijia 1080p on offer for watching the baby and i am very happy about it (apart from some chinese instructions etc, which are not deal breakers). If you check github you can also see that there are some developers that have hacked/altered the firmware to have it monitor and play in stream (like from VLC player for instance). I haven't tried it but they claim that it is possible and seems to be stable.
