Hypothetically, just because you are a cheat, it does not mean every one in your extended family, with the same surname, is a cheat, though they might all be as hinted in your humour.
.
VW spec 50700 at £17 is a fabulous price, if found, it is low saps for diesel and good for long life service (ususally double the money).

This is a supermarket own brand oil.

My question was about whether a branded oil would be better for emissions or would a supermarket own brand be just as good?

All oils of the same specification are the same, it is the specification that matters. Same for diesel and petrol, same specification, same octane value. As for additional additives or exceeding beyond the specifications, then who knows as there are so many variables.
.
Similar situation with medicines, genrics versus brands, some do feel better with brands .

The way you phrased your question was a loaded one to snipe at VW.
