I'm looking for a cheap bluetooth HRM. My old cycle computer is knackered since the mount shot off on a ride and I cant find another so I'm either going to get a cheap computer (probably a used Leyzne or similar) or use an old phone in a case on the bike. It's all short rides, rarely much over 2 hours so battery life isnt an issue. I'm not "training" but I want to use Strava to see how my rides compare.

What should I look out for when it comes to buying a HRM?

I’d start off by looking for one that pick up your heart rate

Thanks, sounds good. Thanks for a useful comment (as opposed to the pointless one above that'll now be muted - there are too many people on here that just need to say something, even when it really is nothing! See, "troll")

What app do you use it with?

Use it with the official wahoo app. Also with the mifit app as I have a mi band thanks to this site !
Works well, logs all work outs. You can select cycling, running etc but also add custom work outs. You also do not need to carry phone as the strap records your work out and then uploads to app when connected.
A friend at work recommended it to me. He is a very good road cyclist and says they are very popular with that mob. Cheers Si

That would be great, thanks.

Do you bother with any other sensors like a specific speed sensor or cadence?

I’m going to try this later for the OP. Do they link the HRM straight to the device for strava or are they going via a Garmin watch etc. I know it definitely works when the HRM is connected to my Garmin which in turn is connected to Strava. There seems to be conflicting advice online that Strava removed direct connections.

edited as Strava have released a statement in October saying no direct connection support.strava.com/hc/…App

Yeah I read something about that, that's why I was a tad concerned as I would like the option of straight to the phone (saves me buying a computer and I could spend the money on one of these and maybe a speed sensor)

The article says you can record straight to Wahoo fitness. I’m guessing the two apps - Strava and wahoo- run at the same time, in,ess the Wahoo app also stores GPS data.
Great HRM. Used mine every day for 3 years and never a problem. Change batteries every 18 months! Works seamlessly with Strava, RidewithGPS, Runkeeper and Elemnt Bolt.
Gonna grab one for the gym, should give accurate calorie burning.
Good little device, one of those devices you rarely even think about because it just works without any issues. I’ve had one for over a year (so far on the original battery) and used it at least weekly alongside cadence and speed sensors connected to a Garmin Edge and more recently with my laptop/iPad when running trainer software (zwift & Tacx trainer). I can’t comment on a direct connection with Strava as I sync the other devices to it but I would imagine if strava allows it this would work.

Agree. Had mine for 4 years. Just works. No direct link to strava though due to strava restrictions.
These are pretty decent. Worked well until I left it in my garage after using it one night and stopped working (guessing either the cold or moisture from not wiping it down afterwards killed it). For £30 it's a steal and I'll pick up another.

If you want to step up then the H10 Polar or Wahoo Tickr X is where you want to be, but in terms of accuracy there's little in it and for zone training these are just fine.

Just spotted that the X is £15 off at the moment too, so £49.99:

So it you buy this to link to strava you need to the following at the start of your run/ride etc;
a) use this with the wahoo app on your phone and record
b) record run/ride on strava phone app
after the ride
c) sync wahoo app with strava?

the above is my guess so can anyone confirm/correct?

I think that's gonna be a deal breaker for me then! The more I think about it, the less sense it makes for me to buy a dedicated computer with gps. I can use my old phone or even put the money into a relatively cheap second phone
I just bought this one, works with every APP I#ve tried it on. Extremely accurate, and with voucher, now less than £19:

This one. As it does both Bluetooth and Ant+ its comparable with almost anything and it takes a watch battery that’s really easy to change (just need a 10p Clint to take the back off).

I’ve been using one of these for the last 3-4 years and it’s been great. I generally change the battery every 18-24 months just to make sure it doesn’t run out and that’s with an average of over 5 hours per week of use. To be honest at this price I’m tempered to get another as the current strap is starting to show signs of wear.
I had a CooSpo before the Tickr. Packed up after 14 months. It's also much bulkier than the Tickr and the strap isn't as pleasant a feel on the skin. I'd definitely pay the extra £5 for this offer!

I have one and it's been really faultless over the last year / 8000 miles. It replaced a garmin strap that went faulty and this is much better. I really like the fact it fastens at the front rather than on the side.
It also works with BLE as well ss ANT+ at the same time, helps when using zwift on iOS.

But it appears that you can't run strava on an android phone anymore, so I might have to give it a miss. I'm not going to buy a computer and one of these - overkill your my needs. Unless anyone can show me how to run this with strava on a phone...

I think Strava recently pulled HRM support. DC Rainmaker covers it on his blog. The Strava app should still work on android though (I’m an iOS user so not 100% sure). You would have to use another app such as wahoo’s own or a device such as a watch or cycle computer and then sync with Strava. I recommend this strap. I bought mine for £40 around a year ago.

Just to confirm you want to test if I can go out with just my phone (I have an iPhone) and the HRM and see if I can get heart rate data into Strava?

Rather than that, you can record the ride directly on the Wahoo app, including GPS and then export it directly to Strava from the app.

This has both Bluetooth and ANT+, so you’re future proofed if you want to use Bluetooth with your phone now, and possibly ANT+ with a cycling computer further down the line.
