With enhanced drawings that show the loving detail of the originals, this truly reflects Wainwright's legacy. If you ever get bored with looking at it, you could even use it to go walking! (Independent on Sunday )

Product Description
This boxed set contains all seven of the Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells by the fell walking legend, A. Wainwright. For this Anniversary edition the pages were freshly reproduced from the original artwork and printed and bound to match the original books as closely as possible. Maps and text are as Wainwright wrote them. Since the guides were compiled half a century ago, they have been treasured by generations of walkers, and television programmes in the year of the centenary of Wainwright's birth introduced them to new enthusiasts. There were no guides like these before Wainwright devised them, and in the years since they were first published, they have never been matched. This boxed set of all seven books is the perfect gift for walkers and lovers of the Lakeland fells.

The writer of these books, Alfred Wainwright, is somewhat of a hero of mine.

He spent more than THIRTEEN years of his life, on his own, walking up and down EVERY peak in the Lake District, using ALL the different paths, UP and DOWN.

Each day he went home wrote about all these mountains, if the mountain as worth climbing or not, the view from the top, the best ways up and the best ways down, and he drew lots of beautiful drawings showing the various mountains and paths.

He brought out a book every couple of years until the whole of the lake district had been covered. This box set includes them all.

His writing is both accurate and detailed, but he has a nice knack of putting humour on to each page. One of his books is dedicated to his "right leg and left leg" that have carried him up all the mountains.

Wainwright was responsible for every single word (writing out every word in long hand) and every single drawing in these books, from the front cover to the back cover, and they are truly a work of art.

Here is one small picture showing an example couple of pages.

The last thing most people say before they set off on a lake district walk is NOT "have you got your map" but "have you got your Wainwright".

This box set would get a great gift for any lover of the lake district, or indeed any lover of walking or rambling.

Excellent. Thats one xmas pressie sorted.

Dont!!!

I liked the Wainwright's Walks series produced by the BBC, except for the awful grating accent and delivery of the actor who read excerpts from Wainwright's books - most offputting - I doubt that Wainwright sounded like such a dullard cretin!
