Waitrose Self Serve Salad Bar - Large size £3.25 but scanning through the till at £2.60

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the salad bar at Waitrose, it is really good. There are a variety of different salad dishes and you can make a pick and mix with them, there are three different size tubs to chose from. The regular one costs £2.45, the large is £3.25 and the family size is £4.50. I regularly buy the large size and the quality of the food is really good, everybody I have recommended it to loves it.

I bought a large size salad tub in the Kingston Upon Thames branch on Wednesday and was charged £3.25 which is how much it costs. But on Thursday I visited the Richmond Upon Thames branch and bought another large bowl but to my surprise I was only charged £2.60. I thought it might just be the Richmond branch that had mispriced the salad bowl because I don't shop in that branch often. Then yesterday on Friday evening I visited the Kingston branch and was again charged £2.60. Then today for the third day running, this time in the Kingston branch again I was charged £2.60. I can't confirm whether the salad bar misprice is affecting the other sizes available or if it's just the large. I suspect the glitch is nationwide though as it has worked in more than one store.

As far as I am aware, absolutely all the cases of E coli so far have been with people who are either in or have been to Germany. I really don't think there is any reason to stop eating fresh veg in the UK. If they do find anything in the UK I am sure it will be all over the news in no time.

Why would VAT be added onto salad?

How much does it usually cost?

Possibly tastes so good as it's full of MSG then? Thats one possibility for putting VAT on salad X)

I am just assuming that the reason I was charged £2.60 instead of the normal price of £3.25 is because VAT wasn't added on like shown in the receipt. It could be that VAT isn't supposed to be added onto this product and it's just a misprice on their system. So the price before VAT should be £3.25 rather than £2.60. Does anybody know whether this a product that should be VAT inclusive?

You know that there are 3 VAT rates on food right? 0 rated, reduced and full?

+1

do people really pay £4.50 for about a quids worth of salad?

Morrisions and sainsburys also have salad carts where you can choose food.

Or pop to harvesters and fill up a extra bag (No I don't do this)

You obviously haven't tried the Waitrose salad bar before. It isn't your typical set up, the ingredients are of high quality and the recipes are delicious. It would cost you more than £4.50 to make if you filled the family sized tub with several of the different dishes. Because all of the different ingredients would cost more than that to buy! This is way more convenient too...

Ahhhhh... Shengis, I see somebody has been paying attention. You won't be surprised to hear I treated myself to another dose of Waitrose salad bar today. Once again I was charged £2.60! But I threw the receipt away with the empty bowl after. I thought it not necessary, I can confirm the glitch is still live. I am sure people believe me by now. However I decided to be a bit more healthy today and refrain from indulging further in the half price Haagen Daaz.
