The discount won’t affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.

Pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meters You can still qualify for the discount if you use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter.

Your electricity supplier can tell you how you’ll get the discount if you’re eligible, for example a voucher you can use to top up your meter.

Many thanks for the reminder. However I've applied for this for my 76 mother 2 times now from Co-Op energy (who she's with) and she's never rewarded with it. So 'Hit & Miss'

Yes very wrong.according to them when I phoned to see if I had been accepted on the scheme, way back in November time, all applications had been processed and those that were LUCKY enough would be let know in due course. All quotas had been reached and was closed. A joke really but its life ! 👎

That's just wrong, horrible system, this is so old people and those on low income can afford heating in the wintertime, should be all who qualify, government not the ones paying this? Will come from the taxes we all pay, so should be guaranteed.

It feels so wrong, but apparently it's true that energy providers have a set quota for which they can claim back from the government.
At the end of the day all current energy providers are private companies who want to earn money, so naturally they allow only so many discounts. Such a pity.

Isn't your fault 💟 when the government quote for * eligible applicants* roughly translates to if your lucky- bit like a lottery! And different providers have their own rules - so they can do ,or not do exactly as they want

When I first heard of this and applied and then my relatives got the discount, I felt a little less cynical about the governments systems, but hearing this today, it's just the usual smoke and mirrors.

It was originally a one off, if I remember correctly, and has been every winter since. I think every supplier has a different timescale when you can apply though. And this is a last reminder before the cut off point.

I hope your successful.
This is actually either easy to get or really hard due to variation on application by each energy company.

I pay for several energy account and for my parent's and aunt's (OAPs) house, I need to add their name in order to qualify. Ovo would not apply the discount so I moved to Scottish Power it was either that or british gas so a bit of a no brainer

I've found it easy myself, similar situation. Must just be the suppliers? British Gas, SSE and Extra Energy have all paid out no fuss, from my experience.
I find it ironic so many people are voting this cold, don't they want to see the government and the rich energy companies actually give a little back to the old and less fortunate amongst us? It's not a bargain post it's a help others reminder.
Watch to take it into account, if your are eligible and thinking about switching supplier - some companies don't do it. You may find if you the 'loss' of £140 grant, may negate any savings. ALWAYS check with your potentional new provider.

Energy poverty is a real thing, I worry about my aunt so pay her bills and set an automated smart timer for her heating. I feel you have to look after your elders especially having seen people freeze to death inside of hospitals (the irony).

40 years ago people in the UK would look out for elders in the community, now its only grandchildren whom are only interested in inheritance. It is a generational change due to attitudes and consequences of our elders. If you have a heart, help someone elderly or in need claim the warm home discount.

Good point, first thing I check when looking at their renewals.

Good post, with a sad truth.
Utilita reached their "allocation" months ago so despite having two disabled people, one a child in our household we were declined and my Nan who is in her 80s was also declined as were many of the people she knows. Seems it was very few people this year.

I'm guessing the bigger companies will have more customers and therefore more demand for this, really sad that all those who qualify don't get the discount.

Every benefit should be means tested in my opinion.

CHANGE company, use a cashback website when you do this too. At 80 years old automatically qualifies with the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, there is no quota but does often need your nan's name as joint account holder, some smaller companies are a bit hopeless, so CHANGE, go with a better company, look at feedback on moneysavingexpert.com/ene…gy/ and change if you want to

no not all benefits are means tests -there is a massive debate in regards to child credit/benefit as an example, another is ESA if you say you have the medical condition of self harm by pinching (lightly)

The fella is also probably fiddling and not declaring everything.

From what I can see you need to be on a low income for this, as for other benefits, the unclaimed far outweigh the scammers, no justification there, just saying, in the bigger picture there are plenty people go without what they are due. After reading what I have and watching I, Daniel Blake, (hardly personal experience I know) I wouldn't imagine esa is an easy thing to get.
anyone been paid this by british gas, i have a disabled family member who signed up months ago and haven't heard a peep, when phoning they couldn't tell if she had qualified but said that if she did it would be paid by march?? Does this sound normal or are they fobbing her off?
