On the 2nd November 2009 Watford Gap (Britain's first motorway service area) - and the M1 (the first long-distance motorway) will both turn 50 years old, and an exhibition will be created at the services. Amongst other celebrations, the BBC will be creating a musical about the services which will be unveiled on the 2nd.

Amongst the events, transport minister Chris Mole will officially re-open the services and unveil a plaque, and there will be visits from various celebrities, bands, staff and vehicles of the time. Both RestBite restaurants will be selling cups of tea for 6p as a throwback to the early days.

I think you might be missing the point.

Its a shameless PR exercise.

Great publicity stunt for so very little cost. I’m guessing the average production costs for a single cup of tea don’t amount to much more than a shilling.

Now if all their meals were sold at 1959 prices, it would be a good deal.

Agreed. A free cup of tea wont make me stop there if I was going past. I'm sure it wouldn't of cost them much to reduce food prices.

Still a decent deal if your driving past today and need to stop for a hot drink.

Great, that will go well with their £4.00 danish.

Why's it called "Watford Gap", when it's nowhere near Watford!

PRs have no shame. (post #18 already, so it's working!).

Actually, if you want Wimpy in the midlands, there's one in Staffordshire - 30 Main Rd
Milford, Stafford, ST17 0UW

In the 60's Watford Gap services was a haunt of many bands, and a night shift lady recently had her autograph collection, including Beatles, Stones, Cliff Richard and many others, sold for a high sum - possibly to be housed at the service area.

I love visiting service stations for the wonderful architecture, stunning gardens, fabulously polite people and the oh-so-cheap prices.

This is quite an amusing deal. I can't imagine too many people will go out of their way for a 6p cup of tea. I guess you're all right with the PR thing. Funny though! Teabags cost about 1p each I think, probably less for catering companies. Maybe the styrofoam cup makes up the other 5p?

Had fish chips n peas there on the way back from wembley for the bargain price of £14.99:x

i recently spent the same amount of money feeding a small african country for a month.

Their meals, especially the baked beans, will probably taste like they were cooked in 1959 if that helps.

Presumably the heat this is getting is entirely for its comedy value? It must take some real talent to make those places as truly awful as they are.

Shouldn't it be 6d (2.5p) maybe, or were they drastically overpriced right from the start?

OMG they're going to sacrifice their 2000% margin/profit for 1 day. I hope they don't go bust.

so the musical is financed by the BBC licence fee I presume?
