Very true and that’s still a great price for the capacity. That said I’ve got a 12 and 14TB sitting here waiting to be installed in a new NAS when it arrives so I should be good for now

But never say never

Isn't that too big for a NAS? Very costly if a drive fails you'd be better off spending the money on a NAS with more bays and use smaller drives that are cheaper to replace.

You’re assuming I’m getting a 2 bay NAS??

I’m waiting for the price to drop on the DS918+ In truth it’s only going to be for Plex media stuff and I have a main server which is currently at 125GB so it’s all going to be backed up there as well and I’ll always have the original discs too

I think the 918 is a nice middle of the road product for the job it will do. I’ll then move on my DS216Play and DS414Slim
Warehouse deals currently has one for £172.97

To be fair a NAS for me is mainly dumbs storage. My existing ones work well but I’d like the ability to run Docker for a few things and also putting everything on a single NAS

I’ll always have my big server (24 bay beast that again is dumbs storage) as it’s a nice huge repository for everything and it means everything is backed up safely

I’ve never really looked at QNAP as I’m very used to how Synology works. I’m sure they’re just as good in truth. Maybe I’ll Perdue and see what’s out there. Any idea what would be QNAPS equivalent of the 918+

Honestly mate u will not go wrong with the qunap 53 range I've had synology too DS had the very first one running android but not impressed with hardware side software is pretty good but jumped to 453a thought it was exllent balanced with good hardware and software but found it limited on 4k play back so made my owb free nas server was pretty good but still lacking a little thn roll on a few years until today and the 653d comes out it looks as tho it ticks all the boxes but will only know when I have one up and running. Have u ever shucked the wd HDD and got them working on ur synology nas?

I’ve not shucked for a Synology but have seen lots of Youtube that have.

Ive shucked for my main server and had to perform the 3.3v pin mod and it’s worked perfectly with a thin sliver of electrical tape

I’ll certainly check out the QNAP thanks for the tip
If I was to shuck into a normal PC... HP Prodesk G1 400 SFF to be precise. Would there be an increased risk of Covid 19 (joke ), no, would it be at a greater risk of failure than shucking to a Nas or leaving as it is?

918+ is a good setup. I bought one at the start of the year. The replacement is out now and is a very minor step up so hopefully that will help you get a good price on the outgoing 918.
I have a Synology 218+ and a previous model Nvidia Shield. Which device is better to install Plex server on ? might grab a couple of 12TB drives for it.

Yes I’ve seen details of the 920+ althoug not yet available in the U.K. (August I think). Test units from Japan have been reviewed but appear to have nothing over 918+ for most of us that would use them in a non business setting

Sure 918+ will be more than I need especially as I will be using for Plex and won’t ever be transcoding.

Synology would be great as dumb storage. If you’re using an Nvidia Shield, you shouldn’t need to transcode at all to Synology should be perfect for you
Great deal! Bought the 12 TB for £ 158, in the end.

And then half an hour later i used to other code and bought a 1 TB NVMe SSD.

The SSD arrived today, but the 12 TB one is missing and UPS tracking states "A damage has been reported and we will notify the sender. Merchandise is missing. UPS will notify the sender with additional details. / All merchandise missing, empty carton was discarded. UPS will notify the sender with details of the damage".

Anyone else had issue's with delivery or is this just a one off ?
