The My Passport range generally offer higher performance (faster write speeds for example, up to 640MBps vs 60MBps) and have a more premium design. Also come with free encryption software and carry a longer warranty (3 years vs 1 year). Hence the higher retail cost.

The new half n half design is ugly.

The new half n half design is ugly.

Yeah, it's probably not for everyone ha ha. WD seem proud of it though judging by some of their marketing. I prefer the design of the older style My Passport and also current My Passport Ultra portable drives.

The WD Elements offers a basic styled enclosure and USB 3.0 read/write speed. It comes bundled with 30-day trial software.

The WD My Passport offers a more stylish enclosure, the same read/write speed as WD Elements but with hardware encryption. It also comes with a full version of WD Backup software

Both are offered with 2 year warranty in Europe as standard.
Also consider Seagate Maxtor M3 4TB (£104.98). Comes with AutoBackup and disk encryption software.

According to amazon reviews it's really slow (20MB/s writes) and have a high failure rate. And this WD likely has USB soldered onto the hard drive rather than a SATA connector. No great options for 4TB at 2.5" it seems.
I got the maxtor m3 4tb from Amazon this week for £105. It's USB 3.1 and obviously it's extremely fast. I believe these are seagate drives under the maxtor name. I've always found seagate to be excellent

That one is USB 3.0 and not USB 3.1 as suggested.

It's USB SuperSpeed(tm) which is either USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 Gen 1, depending on who you talk to. See here for details.

But the linked drive has a transfer rate of 480 MB per second, hardly even meeting the 3.0 spec.

I don't know where that figure comes from. The interface has a max speed of 5 Gbps but you will be lucky to get far beyond 100 MB/s sustained transfer speed with any mechanical drive. If speed is more important than capacity you should look at SSDs.
