Nice, heat
Hot, and now they reduce it by a few pounds after we spent so much around xmas time lol this is same as July price, there is not much true reduction.
Despite my best effort, WD portable drives just can't connect to my laptop's USB 3.0 ports - the light is on, but doesn't show up in Windows. I have this problem with 3 different WD Passport Ultra drives; updated firmware, laptop port drivers, etc. Everything else, and other brands, connect fine.

Have you tried it on other laptop or desktop, other than yours.

I have a similar issue with my WD Elements desktop hard drive. It's very picky as to whether it'll want to work with my laptop's USB 3 port. Sometimes a restart will cure it but otherwise I use the USB 2.0 port.
I paid around this much for most of my 4tb wd drives i own. So heat grom me.

Yes, no joy on a USB 3 port. Works fine on USB 2.

Just a thought, try using ‘safely remove drive’ option on Windows. As some drives can be picky.

Also look in disk management to see if it shows and reformat in FAT32 to see if that works.

I’m sure most just yank out the usb without using safely remove, this personally causes me issues if I want to mount the drive in Mac and transfer files

Have you (or someone else) enabled the hardware encryption? If so it won’t show up in Windows as a hard drive without unlocking (with your password) - it will show as a CD drive called “WD Unlocker”.
Is this Solid State? I dropped a portable hard drive and it corrupted.

HD as per description in deal subject. You will not be able to get this size ssd at the price for a long time.
There is a handy utility called, "USBDeview."

It Lists all usb devices connected and devices that have been connected in the past.
I deleted over 40 once.
Can this be taken out and used in a laptop?
Could anyone recommend a auto backup software for files? Or are the ones included in WD etc fine to use?

It’s highly unlikely, in the past they used to be standard sata drives plugged into a little usb board you can remove. For a while now they’ve just soldered on the USB port, so no sata connection at all.

Why are you tempted then? Just buy storage when you need it, basically the cost only ever goes down (and the price generally drops quite rapidly.)

Is there any speed difference between USB2 and USB3 for a drive like this?
The height of the drive will probably be too big
Can i use it as a external hard drive or its only for backups?
FYI - be careful with the USB port on these drives. The design of the PCB is boneheaded and they're extremely fragile. Drives themselves are reliable, but the PCB is awful.

Always do this, no yanking. Reformatting is not an option as I have almost 700GB stuff on it. I guess I will live with the slower USB 2; it is not an emergency but was hoping anyone here would have solved this.

It is an external hard drive, can be used for anything.

USB 3 is 3-5x faster in my experience.

On windows have you tried going to disk manager and manually assign a drive letter? after you do this the drive should show up every time.

Depending which version of windows you have, usually can access disk manager by:

1. right click my computer / this pc
2. select manage
3. disk management option will be on the left pane.
4. choose your drive then right click on it
5. assign drive letter

You could send me one
Really sorry to be thick

But will this work on my xbox 1, fed up of deleting games constantly on game pass
Only works with USB2.0 for me, but fab price nonetheless! Thanks OP!
Xbox compatible?
Would this be good to store Plex movies on?
A friend of mine mentioned that several of his USB3 HDs have rubbish cables that keep failing. I recently had one of my drives have exactly the same as above...powers up on my laptop USB3 port, but not recognised etc. but worked in the USB2 ports. Swapped the cable and it starting working perfectly again.

Very basic advice and you would not expect the cables to fail, but they do, so it is worth a try
