nvme drives do get hot what temp, were they thermal throttling?

80-90deg under load. its well documented these are poor quality for wd. but if you can't afford the likes of a Samsung then this is ok. but im not put something in my laptop that gets to 80deg without cooling especially when there so close to the mobo! many people report heat trouble in the reviews on amazon.

I agree. 960 evo are blazingly fast!
90 degrees ssd? WTF that's not usual. western digital wth?
It's not just the heat that's the issue with these and a laptop, it's that these are power hungry. It can have a real impact on battery life vs one of the better nvme drives.

Great price though.

Defo, 960 is the king of all ssd's,
It's a good price for that capacity, but I think i'll stick with my 256GB 960 EVO for boot and add cheaper SSDs for capacity. I like running Performance Test 8.0 and seeing my drive in the top 1% of all those tested

I'll be honest, in day to day use, it's difficult to say. The EVO 960 was part of a new build that replaced a 5 year old rig - my old PC was was a pretty decent 4th generation i5 and had a couple of well spec'd SSDs in it, so it was no slouch.

The new build is an upgrade in several areas - although I retained one of the SSDs and the GFX card from the old PC. Details of new build here: uk.pcpartpicker.com/use…pbv.

£1100 for a pc that my 2012 spec pc will smack up and down in games

Your 2012 pc? So best you can have is gtx 690, whilst they do still perform well considering their age, it would not smack a gtx 1060 around. I'd say they would perform quite similar except for newer games with newer qualities that require more upto date support.
Also, I don't know, but with that modest GPU and a ryzen build I'd argue they probably aren't the biggest gamer either - so perhaps a different type of station.

Oh really do you have one of those fabled 2500k that run at 5Ghz on Air.
I suspect you don’t have all a 2012 spec, so you are either misrepresenting the facts or a lying blowhard.

These days, I only do a little light gaming, but when I do, I play at 2K. I'd be interested to see the specs of your 2012 PC that matches the 1060's frame rate at 2560 x 1440.

Not that similar...

And you are correct about me not being a massive gamer, I wanted a decent spec build that would last me around 5 years and support some reasonable upgrades over that time. It also needed to be quiet, hence the exorbitant spend on Noctua fans

Yeah not bad then, I would like to upgrade my GPU but with prices at the moment - not a chance! More likely to splash on a nvme like this for my work laptop.

I would say that for benchmarking completely your 1060 would wipe a 690, but in the real world in the gaming world as Shonk was referring to (if indeed his was a 690, the best for that year) then when you think BF3 @ 1080p 4xmsaa/16xAF DX11 gets 690 = 145fps vs 1060 = 138fps OR Crysis 3 similar settings 690 = 60fps vs 1060 = 50fps then you can see it is different.
Obviously as you put above gaming at 2k will mean the 690 will run out of memory a lot earlier on and thus wouldn't keep up, also as I put your 1060 will support a lot of the newer qualities (and even optimisations) being used in games as well though.

I think given the cost of so many components at the moment it's a fairly decent build given your requirements as well.

Even if you did have a PC that did outperform his PC overall you'd still face major drawbacks so you're just flat out wrong. That being said why make a petty remark in the first place?

sorry im not mad at him or anything
im sure he made the right choices for a new build
its just frustrating that its 2018 and prices are where they are
that you get minimal gains for so much money

e.g.
lets face it 1060 is a £150 card
1080 is under spec'd due to lack of competition from amd of late in the high end market
so they are just free to rehash and down spec parts
if amd really kicked ass with vega for sure volta cards would be out for gamers at £400-500 not gimped either
then there's the miners buying up all cards etc..

just sucks atm for anything pc related atleast amd have put pressure on intel on the cpu core count side

Ah, I see; I apologise for being less than polite. I can understand your frustrations.
