With speeds up to 140MB/s** and up to 5TB of extra storage, the WD_Black P10 Game Drive will push your console or PC to new levels of performance." and "**Based on read speed and internal testing. As used for transfer rate, megabyte per second (MB/s) = one million bytes per second. Performance will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations."140MB/s seems a bit meh? this is still less than half the theoretical speeds of USB3.So if you are a console gamer you are stuffed! as almost no drives deliver on max USB3 speeds, however if you are a PC owner investigate Primocache and set up a tiered array using M.2 or SSD with a good quality mechanical hard drive. this will give far better performance. I set my steam drive up this way with a 4tb internal and a 250gb SSD. the comparison is off the chart as loading times from my external "Game Drive" are full on yawn taking minutes longer to load. Where as the load times from Primocashe gives SSD like performace.

Im sure you are already aware but ill point it out for others that the limiting factor in this products is the mechanical hdd inside it and not the usb spec, this drive will only run at this speed even it was torn down and used on a sata port.
Good deal at this price. And at the regular price, proof that just putting “game” or “gaming” in the name allows you to charge up to 50% more with no benefit whatsoever

Versus the £97 Passport version you get 3 yr vs 1yr warranty and a metal case instead of plastic. However you don't get encryption.
indeed this is just bulk storage. Its not a fast HDD being 2.5inch and nothing like high performance storage like nvme. But then 5tb of pcie4 nvme storeage will cost a little more than £100

Hehehe....Gaming laptop comes to mind, put a duff mobile 1050 in so you can play counter strike and call it a gaming lap top and somehow they can charge upward of £750, when it's only redeeming quality is as a hand warmer whilst the fans rev up to max.

How easy is it to transfer files from one external drive to another

How easy is it to transfer files from one external drive to another

Would like to know this as well
iz12345678919/02/2020 16:14

PC

So you could use the traditional gui copy paste, xcopy or robocopy

Robo allows you to copy with a mirror effect so it only copies changes or new files it can also remove files on the copy that you don't have any longer on the master

If you want a straight up copy and format old drive you wont need to repeat

You can also use macrium reflect to clone one drive the other. This might work if you do an xbox external drive to another but not tried that

All depends on what data and how the drive is formatted and used for

IF it's a drive which your using for your laptop game library, for example, and you want to simply plug it in and use it in lieu of the one your copying from, you might also want to change the assigned drive letter after copying all the files.

Presuming you are on windows, then once you have moved everything over. Remove the drives safely and reattach the new drive.
Then press start and type "disk management". Right click and run with administration rights.
Right click the drive in question and select "change drive letter".
Chose the letter that you need (your old drive used).
Apply.
Close disk management.
Enjoy...

(As others have said, the method of copying depends on the drive data and use, but for most cases a simple gui copy action should be sufficient)

Shame can’t use this with both PS4 and Xbox at the same time. 5TB is too big for one console.

Depends on your usage, I have a 3TB drive installed and it's nearly full. I have a rubbish internet connection so deleting and redownloading games is a pain in the bum so I keep them installed (The ones I or my family play)

Games are only getting bigger too as time goes on, there's quite a number of games that are 100GB+ and if you store video files etc on the console that eats into it more.

But yes I agree for the average person 5TB is overkill.
Fyi using this on the Xbox it's a loud drive. Forever moving and ticking, even when the Xbox is on soft shutdown. Otherwise a stable drive
Is this the same chassis as the 12tb Xbox branded wd drive? That one mentions active cooling? Or is this just marketing speak for the aluminium housing?
Also the drives in these are shuckable? I recall seeing something about the actual hd being a oem wd red?

No, 8tb and 12tb have active cooling.

Maybe partitioning would work? Not sure if each partition can have its own format or not but worth investigating.

I can support this claim. These drives are loud and clicky, I keep mine under the desk on the carpet and can feel it's.vibrations with mine feet. I play with headphones so its clickiness does.not.bother me.
