Just ordered one, go via nectar for some points too. This works out @£31.20 per 1tb, so even cheaper than buying a 2tb one (which is at least £65).

Price dropped to £44.80! This makes it £29.86 per terabyte!

got this despatched for £45.90 from amazon yesterday.

Good deal, do I don't I order? Got a drive thats clicking and about to fail, should I replace it with this one? Hmm

Mixed reviews puts me off......

Im in the market for a portable hard drive but some reviews are putting me off.

What do people think of this one. Bullet proof reviews although a little more expensive. I guess you pay for what you get!!!!

Hi some of the reviews that are bad is because wrong adapter shipped.....Some others for built quality and speed.
Most of the reviews are good. I own portable wd and it's excellent....I will let you know when I get this one, as I have prime for a month I should get it this Monday.

Bought. hot. Thankyou.

This WD isn't portable. It needs to be plugged into the mains.

The drive that arsenal79place mentions is a completely different drive. It's a 2.5 portable and 500gb..... So it really depends on what you need. They are not comparable, but the buffalo one does have all good reviews.

These are well built

Hot from me.

Hot as folk, paid £42.00 for a 1TB one last week.

Don't forget that if you go through Nectar website you get points back on you Nectar card.

Just in case you don't know the difference, this drive uses an external power adaptor. It is NOT usb powered as Amazon states on the link.

Great price, I have ordered about 6 WD external drives lately - mix of 1 and 2TB for different people and not had a issue with 1

Good to hear, mine should arrive Monday, have heaps of stuff to move from my 1tb and have to make it ntfs (not sure why but I made my toshiba 1tb fat32 which is dead slow.....) and need just more storage overall.

Great price but I prefer the longer warranty WD HDD's

Quite a decent price but not hot enough for me to pull the trigger at £46.80.

Just got my lovefilm £15 voucher the other day though, so jumped on this for £31.80

So, is it a general rule of thumb that external hard drives above a certain capacity (1TB?) will always need an external power supply? I'm looking for a high capacity (ideally 2TB, although 1TB will do) that is USB powered but I haven't had any luck.. Anyone got any recommendations?

Is it just a case of waiting until the technology can catch up to allow the big hard drives to use less power, therefore negating the need for an external power source?

Price for everything (electrial) will drop over time, relative to what is coming next etc. That said "at the moment" this is the cheapest (from what we can see), lets be honest in 2-3 months time this will probably be price for 2TB version, then at Xmas 2.5TB etc.. - stuff moves on so quick.

After reading review the only downer for me is no on/off switch (grrrr!!)
HOT deal for me

Can the HD be taken out and put in a pc and is it SATA?

Ummm.Just thinking are the hard drives which come inside the external caddies(like this one) slower than the internal hard drives?

Haven't got a clue what you lot are talking about. This site gets worse every day- its all dvds and hard drives with the cliquey regulars and i-pub bores monopolising the chat and jumping down the throats of anyone who dares to rock the boat.

1TB are common, 1.5TB are available but I don't think there are any 2TB yet. In any case they cost more per TB than the external powered variety.
