My son is about to build his first proper gaming PC and wants an M.2 SSD for his OS rather than a SATA SSD. This looks like a reasonable price to me, assuming you have Prime so don't have to pay postage. Before I bite I'm hoping someone will advise whether this will be suitable for the MSI B450 Tomahawk Max mobo?
I believe this is also the same price at Scan if you don't have Prime.

This won't be any different to a SATA SSD in terms of performance. Youu'l need to look at NVMe M.2 drives for better speeds.

Have you been into the bios and checked what boot drives are available? This may help but you will need to check your laptop has an M.2 slot

What he said. This is a SATA SSD, just attached via an m.2 port rather than via a SATA cable.
Your rig should support NVMe, and so it makes little sense to buy any other kind of storage device. Search NVMe on here and there are a few drives on Amazon that pop in and out of stock (or the price goes up and down) for little more than this.

This drive is also cheaper direct from WD (I just bought a couple myself too) with the new user code if you do need SATA (as not all m.2 slots support NVMe). Shipped from the Netherlands but arrived in a few days for me. If you are looking for an OS drive I'd step up to a WD Blue drive though, as they are noticably snappier in use (the Blue has DRAM, and so handles lots of smaller requests faster than the Green, and so is better for OS use. The Green is fine for storage or for things like game files though). You also get a longer warranty too.

Thanks - I bow to a true master bargain hunter! I've gone your suggested route and ordered directly from WD

Agree with previous comments, blue and/or NVMe would be a better route.

All depends on your requirements/budget sometimes every penny may matter if you're on a tight budget!

I've stuck a super cheap SSD into my lads first gaming PC just like this, he's 8. Still like night and day compared to spinning disk and fine for his requirements... used an old optiplex refurb and a gtx 1050ti and added SSD, whole build coming in at around the £200 mark and perfect for minecraft/fortnite/overwatch/scrap mechanic/sims etc. will play most stuff perfectly fine at 1080p

M.2 SATA drives still good for reducing clutter and cabling but I’d get NVMe if I could. Unless that’s what he meant - if it’s a windowed case then definitely.

You can also have 480GB - £49.99 using Code from WDCode 5OFF1UK[Image]

the 500 GB Blue SATA m.2 drive is only a quid or two more with the 10% off new email signup code (although it's currently out of stock) - that will be a better buy for most people. It's faster and (slightly) bigger so easily worth the extra cost.

Yup, thought about that but since it's oos can't comment. but I'm really broken comparing the price few months ago. These were less than £24 and hardly got 100

does this have dram?
Had one of these drives and it wasn’t great even loading up steam seemed quite sluggish the lack of cache and the green credentials make this a little too slow to be a real bargain. Spend a little more on a better drive you will notice the difference in quite a few scenarios especially larger file transfers

hi all, excuse slightly daft question, but i have a coda spirit which takes : M.2 2280 SATA B Key Connection (up to 1TB) . will the 500gb sata blue work ? i don't quite understand sata b compatability and i see the wd is sata III....... cheers
aliexpress.com/ite…tml sell a Weijinto m.2 SATA 240gb SSD for $29/£23 including postage. The SATA version is reviewed here in detail, where they say it's as fast as a Samsung 860 evo even at 80% full:

They have a 360gb one for $47/£38.

The SATA version is at aliexpress.com/ite…tml with many impressed user reviews and benchmarking pictures.

6% of SSDs fail in the first few years, whatever the make.

Yes, it will work fine. The b refers to the key on the m.2 slot, not the SATA revision. Google m.2 keys and you'll find a load of descriptions of the different keying with lots more detail and diagrams than i can post here.
