Cool device. Firmwares a little buggy but 99% of the time works great. Use it for nearly all my movies now and have it sharing the drives to the network too.

this is what I want to know... If I connect the device to a HDD via usb and connect a wifi dongle on another port (btw, any suggestions on these?)... will I be able to see the files on the HDD on my PC and can I save files onto it?

A6unx, how did you get that info.

goto camelcamelcamel.com change to uk as country

only disadvantage that I have found is that there is no BBC iplayer support

Logix send an email to Western Digital and they will be able to tell you.

When I bought my WDTV Live Hub I had some fairly complex questions....fired them off and got a reply 3 hours later!

Couldnt live without mine now...and boy oh boy does the interface look cool (It downloads the metadata for your films...looks like youve got blockbuster on your telly lol)

when i was looking around at media players i was going to purchase this but went for the

scan.co.uk/pro…yon!hd-mini-hdmi-1080p-h264-mkv-mpeg-wmv9-xvid-avc-iso-network-player

had no problems with this item fantastic pc of kit

Tracydcp: What made you go for the AC Ryan? I am torn as to which media player to go for, WD, AC Ryan and even the Asus O!Play. They all seem pretty reasonable.

I have been hearing good things abt WD ones for quite a while now.. and should have great soft update / support .. so went with that...

If you all want is to play usb based media tho, there's one out there for about £20.

I've got one of these which doesn't do all the online stuff and I love it, used it loads for about two years now, even taken it on holiday (if you do that pls remember the remote and USB sticks...)

Cheaper at Bestbuy.Sorry I was looking at the price of the standard player.

Netgear Dongle i own works just fine. Yes to both of they above but due to the processor onboard it transfers slow than 3MB/s. With EXT3 i believe it is a little faster but not much.

All these media boxes are specifically setup to play video files and nothing else so tasks such as the above only have a good speed on HTPC or NAS

Does this do exactly the same as the Acer Aspire Revo thing which creates a home media center, obviously without XBMC?

got one and its a great bit of kit but doesn't play all .mkvs

Not bad for 1/2 the price of a revo too. Revo's make good low power servers though.

I am not going to read files on my PC, just writing at max 1MB/s (torrents)

Got 2 WDTV's ...plays everything i throw at it ...all MKV's, etc .....and the ongoing support and firmware updates is superb !!

i have one of these and they are absolutely quality, especially when you upload custom firmware and configure the movie sheets etc - looks uber cool

Is there any possible way to play realmedia and flv on this model without much hassle? Just placed order on a ST goflex tv as they claim to support rm.
I have a top nas worth over half a grand so nevermind about usb hdd compatibility. It is annoying to know officially WD let you play realmedia on lower model but not high end models!:(

I have 4 of these throughout the house linked to a buffalo linkstation 2 tb nas (with another 2tb usb drive attached) and connected by homeplugs (just cheap economy ones @ £35 each I think) - is fantastic - all my films on the Nas - all my DVDs now in the attic - and the WDs now act as a dvd jukebox - brilliant

5aq1b, how do you get the custom menu system to work like that please? The interface is the only thing I hate about the wdtv

My guess is that he's installed the B-Rads operating system (just google it, its easy to get hold of). You can then use 'thumbgen' to generate "moviesheets", it scours various sites like Amazon and Film Affinity to get all of the info shown in 5aq1b's picture (inc thumbnail box picture) automatically!! Its very good BUT I installed it and it messed up my player and didnt show the moviesheets, not a massive issue as I just downloaded the original OS and reflashed but I have to say that for a few horrible minutes my heart was pounding a bit!!

5aq1b, any chance you could give a step by step I could follow, the one on the internet was a bit hard to follow?!?!?

Anyone got any advice for the cheapest wifi adapter to go with this?

How do you get metadata down from the net with this media player (wdtv) ?

Do you mean this actually downloads the movie info etc automatically or are you on about using tools such as ThumbGen to create the moviesheets?
