I am scared leaving my front door each morning but I do stuff like looking left and right before I cross the road to mitigate these problems.

Good price - am voting hot - but 12TB in one external drive, scares me (maybe irrationally as I wouldn't invest in any redundancy, and MTBF is shorter on multiples than a single, but impact higher on single.)

Mad
£17 per 1TB. Not exactly good value for money, really.
Ok for a backup drive, they do run very hot though, at least the 10tb version does. Just a shame these are the ones which also require a power brick. The USB ones seem to max out at 5TB (for now)

You probably also lock your door, and maybe set an alarm, and have insurance in place, so if somebody is afraid of having all their data on one drive you should respect that fear... Or learn to fear it

I'm no hero. Just put my pants on one leg at a time each morning. But yes, fear in small doses can be a great motivator.

Now you're just showing off.

Solid username by the way.
p.s. I used to work with an Anker and I'm wondering if you're him... it's hard to ask without revealing our true identities

Thanks. No relations. Just wanted something that tied two references together. I like Anker products and the film anchor man. Liked your ID comment. Totally kickass.

Anker product ambassador would have been my next guess.

Glad you liked it. Nice reference to my user pic... I debated changing it not long ago but ultimately forgot and haven't bothered... I was going to change it to Scrat off Ice Age (he likes nuts so to reference my username)
Shuck shuck shuck shuck shuck shuck
shocked to see some down voting this, this is the lowest it's ever been according to camelcamelcamel, plus i cannot find a comparable 12tb drive for same price.
Is the drive in this any better than the one in the 12TB Elements? I am thinking for shucking purposes. The 12TB Elements is out of stock but the same price and has been down to £180.

I believe one key difference between the Elements and the My Book drives is that the My Book drives have built-in encryption. This makes the drives more secure for your data, however, it also means that if the drive gets a fault during use, there's a chance you could lose everything because it's hardware encrypted, and thus files wouldn't show up in a caddy if you took it apart.

I'm not sure how this affects shucking so nobody ask me that please.

Yup.within the last month the 12TB Elements unit (same drive inside, just different lame software) was £20 less and £15/TB
£20 per TB would even be good if the drive inside was Red...
only a month til Black Friday folks. If you’re after high capacity WD Reds then wait for the 20TB / 24TB / 28TB WD Duos to go on offer

You wrote that like you are sure they will be?
I ordered the 12TB elements on 2 September when they were £200 which was out of stock at the time but was meant to be with me by yesterday. I called Amazon and they said it could be December before it's delivered now. Voted hot on this deal but I am tempted by the hints at bigger capacity drives in the black Friday sales. Anyone know what kinds of prices we could expect for higher capacity external drives?

The WD Duos have been on offer on Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day for the last 2 years. Very confident they will be included, but it is ultimately just a guess (worth waiting 4/5 weeks to find out if you want Reds)

I paid £668 for 2x 20TB WD Duo on Amazon Prime Day (15th July). These contained 4x 10TB Reds which I put in my Synology. Approx £167 each (£16.70/TB). Also you can sell the Duo shells for £50 each on eBay (haven’t got round to this yet). Just to give you an idea of what Black Friday might have in store.
