WD My book 3TB reconditioned drive £54.99 @ WD Store

Found 30th Mar 2016
Ridiculously cheap external drive, but also can be taken apart to get to the internal drive. I have had two such drives running in my NAS for the last year or so.

They contain a WD Green 5400rpm drive.

FREE DELIVERY & 6 month warranty (unless you open the case to get the drive inside out - then no warranty)

If you buy two, you can use the code WDSTORECPN to get £10 off - making it £100 for two 3TB drives!

Not true, I had been very happy with them ordered twice with no problem
me too. never had a problem with them.
I've ordered a drive from them before and it arrived within a few days.

I also notice they have 5TB recertified external discs for £90, which may be of interest to some. Personally I have gone for the 5TB Toshiba external drive which via flubit came in at £97 a couple of weeks ago.

I got a 3tb drive from them last year and got it quickly and well packed and it's worked fine.
What drives are in these? Wd green?

Be aware that this means you have no warranty on the drives.

He meant if you take them apart to get the internal drive out. It means you void the warranty.

I'd want this for my Xbox one, but it's mains powered and I'd prefer it to be phantom powered so won't be buying. I'd expect it would still work with an Xbone though. Good price. Heated.

When I bought my two a year or so ago, there was a code to get £10 of orders over £100. I can't find the past now though. Anyone else?
WDSTORECPN gives you £10 of >£100 spend. I just bought 2 x 3tb and the code worked.

Thanks jawaid87! 2 X 3TB drives for under £100. It doesn't get better than that.
So, umm, reconditioned.. What exactly does that entail? Does it mean it has had issues before?

Nice one Jaw! Had 2 x2 orders & a cable, so cancelled and did it again and saved another £20, as for others saying
items do not get shipped from WDS, ours are arriving monday ;-)
yeah, just spent 3 days traying to get one of these working, worked fine for a year, then dead - put it through wd lifeguard - didn't pass any of the tests, then I put it through windows chkds - now it is working, but lost 50GB space. But still - if I would need one - would buy again reconditoned - just remmeber to run diagnostics now and then...
You should try a SMART diagnostics utility and see how long the disk has been used by the previous person, e.g. DriveDX:

I've checked the SMART data on a couple of WD recertified drives and it does not exist.

I don't mean they've reset it, more like they've removed the memory that stores the SMART data. Tried several programs and they all just showed null values.

Will the Xbox power any drive via usb? Unlikely.

Ordered 20+ unit and use the code for £10 off no issue here

Worth pointing out

1) The drives inside at WD Greens
2) The controller is locked to this make and model of drive! Even WD Blacks do not work!!
3) The controller format the drive in a wild manner so you cannot take the drive out of the unit WITH DATA ON and read the data with the drive not in the enclosure. No problem with the drive in a PC / MAC if you format it, just don't expect any data to survive!

Info here wdmybook3tb.blogspot.co.uk/ also how to open the unit without breaking the tabs etc.

Shame on WD for locking the controller it prevents reuse and increase landfill

Its a 6 month warantee and the disk and the case are labelled factory refurb.
I think there are items the keep for warranty replacement units and they sell on if not needed to fulfill there warranty obligations. I've had a 3 running 24x7 lots of IO no issues.
Ordered on Tuesday March 29th, money taken but still not shipped. Not impressed so far. Emailed them (Sunday)...

That is probably the encryption. Usually with WD enclosures they use always-on hardware encryption and then let you encrypt the key with a password. That way you can instantly turn off and on the "encryption". This is the reason I generally avoid WD drives and use the Seagate portable ones that contain Samsung 2.5" sata drives, since there is no encryption you can easily move between enclosure and internal.

But you could also get WD elements drives as long as the usb isn't soldered on.

Did you install the USB driver for reading SMART data? Or maybe you were using them over SATA anyways...

Just received mine today Wednesday, ordered last Wednesday, shipped Monday (UPS from Amsterdam).

Mine is a WD30EZRX 'Caviar Green' as suggested and the SMART interface/data is exposed and works fine. Half a dozen counts for power on/spin up so seems it's been minimally tested, zero power on hours, so looks like an unused drive in my unit. It also let my initiate a long internal test via smartctl. I used smartctl from a gparted live CD.

For Linux users, hdparm -y does spin down the drive, but hdparm -Snn does not set the idle time (and hdparm -B is not supported), seemingly you have to set the idle time using the Windows/OSX apps supplied on the drive itself before you reformat it.

You may have received a previously DOA unit where the external enclosure was faulty, not the actual HDD unit. In which case you got lucky and essentially received a new HDD.

From what I've been reading, if the drive has previously failed they can't legally reset the power on hours count as it would be misleading to the consumer.

Forgot to mention, all the drives I tested were internal SATA Blue units.
