surely cheaper to build your own nas

an ssd for os and software (£16.99) *probably cheaper, cba to look so just looked on the side for prices from current deals*
4 x 6tb wds on offer atm for (£83.99) *probably cheaper, cba to look so just looked on the side for prices from current deals*

£352.95 and a whole £110.04 left for the case (witch a 4 bay nas, can be got for half of that, same even with the boot / os drive, and guts, tho not like you need any thing beefy for nas guts, about £15 on ebay would get them), so 24tb storage for less

If shuckable and 2x 10tb a 10tb internal drive is about £280 x 2 = £560. Take drives out and put them in a NAS.

Right but work out how much that would be if it contained proper nas drives instead of el cheapos.
This thing contains 20TB of WD Reds which sell for around £280 each for a 10TB one and the 6TB ones are around £170, even Seagate's nas drives are around the same price.

Bottom line, this is the cheapest way to buy high capacity nas drives.

red vs any other well made drive doesnt matter

my computers are one 24/7 365 days a year, never had a drive fail (tho never not googled the hell out of a drive before i buy it either so lol)

reds are just a marketing ploy for the sheep that will play more for drives that say when they not in your nas, they will drive your car for you, oh wait they dont say that, but you get the point, or just dont and still think yours right

long as well reserached a drive is a drive

But if you’re using a RAID 1 set up, your option would give 12TB of usable storage whereas the WD would have 10TB. Seems like quite a lot of effort to go to just for an extra 2TB, so I think those people looking for a simple NAS with lots of storage would probably be better suited to the WD. Depends on your needs and tech ability really!

true, and a much more sane way of putting it, than the other guy
Personally I wouldn't have anything to do with WD cloud products,,i had quite enough with 2 wd clouds,,, they were so unreliable, even using ssh and switching off services,, it was ridiculous, all I wanted them to do is what they said it would do and it didn't, well it did sometimes, badly, so I removed the 2 red drives and bought a synology 918plus,and it's great, it just works...lucky I got the wd clouds cheap, as they would of been a complete waste of money, if I hadn't... WD like to ruin there products with updates that make it worse, and then when it's knackered, stop support.

I've read that reds are just greens with wdidle set. I've had 3 greens (wdidled) and 1 red in a NAS for a good few years. No problems with any. The red seems to register 1 degree celcius below the greens, but that could be due to the position of the drive in the NAS and doubt it really means anything.

All hard drives will fail at some point though.

true that all will, tho why you put them in raid1, or just keep back ups else where, depending on what your storing, tho ya with large like this raid 1

but ya drives are drives for the most bad, unlike a bad brand

tho like said this is probably a better deal than make your own, for the non techies
If you remove the 6tb drives from the cases the warranty is void ...... could be worth the risk if you bought 5 and uses Raid 5 + a hot spare.

So you saying void warranty on 4 Units, then find a 4 bay NAS for the difference and hope you don't run into any failed drives for a gain of 2tb?

WD Reds have more Warranty than normal drives, unless the WD Reds which come in the 20tb Unit doesn't?
