WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra Diskless NAS Enclosure - Amazon Warehouse Like New - £89.23

Found 27th Nov
Very cheap price as Amazon Warehouse is 20% off (discount applied in basket). This usually goes for £140 but Amazon are also doing it new for £116.

Excellent entry level 2-bay NAS. Simple to set up and reliable.

No HDDs in them FYI. Decent price tho

Anyone help can't find it cheers

A good fast transfer speed NAS. Processor a bit slow to run other apps such as Plex.

Not coming with the discount for me

Just bear in mind that if these are like the WD My Book Duo they won't like anything but supported WD drives in them. Worth checking if that is the case before spending that much on the enclosure.

Hi CyDoNia - I have mine running successfully with a Toshiba and Seagate drive for over a year.

Must be different to the My Book then. Good to know.

As far as I know the My Book's drives are not supposed to be interchangeable with other HDDs.

Yeah they can be changed but only for other supoorted WD drives.

Thanks for the reply

Well I didn't know that.!!!
What a turn up for the Books

All sold

Amazon doesn't check their returned goods before they resell it in Amazon warehouse. As long as its not physically damaged, they'll sell it. But for electrical items, people usually return it because it doesn't work in the first place.

I ordered this on Friday - it's being delivered today. I think I got it at a slightly lower price too. I'll let you all know the condition and if it's working later today!

So for anyone still tracking this thread - this thing kinda sucks for my purpose. It does not transcode in Plex so if you have any MKV or AVI filess, they will not play on your end devices. It should play MP4s without problem. But this is a major dealbreaker for me so I might even return it

If I knew you were getting this as a Plex server I would definitely have warned you off it for transcoding. However depending on your budget you may want to look into keeping this and getting an Nvidia shield TV 16gb or 500gb.

I have this as just a NAS storage and the Nvidia Shield as a Plex media server. The Shield is amazing! capable of 2-3 simultaneous over LAN/Remote transcodes of 1080p x264 media while also direct playing to my HDTV.

It also direct plays x265 HEVC 4K HDR content. But will struggle to transcode x265 (as will anything but a high end pc)

Another option is to return the NAS and build yourself a Ryzen 5 based pc ~£300 which will transcode things very well for you.

Did yours come with the screws and tabs for putting hard drives into it? Mine hasn't.... :(Interestingly the box says 16TB and there's nothing but the shell and a power lead, nothing to keep the hard-drives from rattling around or being pulled out

Hi montblanc.

There's only one thumb screw and tab like you can see in the picture here. If that is missing you could ask Amazon to replace it/the unit.

Those are missing, that bottom thing is present but missing the ring, and it's bettered about and says void on it everywhere. Edit: I've found that it's missing something even more important I thought the power lead was just the plug one end and the 2 pin thingy the other end, no it's actually missing the 12V transformer!

What is even more disappointing is they won't let me have another one, only refund my £89 at the cost of even more of my time waiting for a courier.

That's really disappointing from Amazon. It's supposed to be covered under their warehouse warranty. Have you tried complaining over the phone?

Thanks for the tip! I've got a spare server sitting at home which I could use as a great alternative but loathe to pay the electrical costs of keeping it on 24/7. On balance, I think I might return this item. Although now I have to copy everything back over to my other hard drives and then unraid the two 3tb hard drives I put in this diskless NAS! Ugh!

Do you know, if I change mode to JBOD, will they return to being two unable hard drives that I can stick in an ICY box or any other PC? Thanks!

you're welcome. AFAIK the EX2 Ultra formats internal drives to EXT4 file format. The drives will still be usable in other devices but will just need to be reformatted according to whatever suitable file format for the device/use case.

Oh perfect! I read somewhere that the device encrypts the drives which makes the unusable elsewhere - But I made sure I didn't encrypt them when I set it up (I remember seeing an option for it 🙃)
I really want an Nvidia Shield (wanna turn it into a retro gaming machine as well as streamer) but they didn't go down in price enough on Black Friday for me to bite - such a shame.
Thanks again for your help, it's been enlightening!

I love my shield, I got the old 16gb version in 2016 black friday sale and never looked back! added a 128gb micro SD as internal storage. Its a great retro gaming device as well as netflix/youtube/IPTV streamer and Plex server.

recently made the jump to 4k HDR TV and the Shield handles it without any hiccups. For price, this device is special.

Nice!! So you must have bought it for the £99 price - I was praying they'd do that this year but £159 was the lowest they went - so disappointed! Always looking on Shpock and eBay for a bargain though!

If I can remember I got it for £116 from Amazon as the £99 offer was sold out everywhere. Bear in mind the 2017 model doesn't have an SD card slot so if you're looking to expand the internal storage then you will need a spare usb/external drive.

Yeah I’ve got two spare 3TB HDDs once I take them out of the Mycloud lol! Just need to stick them in an enclosure and I’m good to go. Or I guess the shield can read from network locations too?

Yes the Shield can mount network shares over SMB protocol. Ethernet is best.

When you connect external storage to the Shield you have the option to make it 'adopted storage' meaning it becomes part of the android internal storage. But then the device gets encrypted so you can't use it with anything else.
