Seen a few offers going for NAS drives and thought I'd link this. Despite being on the market for a few years now it's still very capable and is a steal at this price, I know because it's what I use.

This model is diskless and supports two bays, so it comes without the hard drives, you'll have to add those yourself. WD Red is recommended as those are NAS specific drives and are officially supported, but you could also opt for other brands such as Seagate, just try and get a drive designed for NAS use if you can.

All the usual support such as Raid, Plex, etc, are all present and work fine. Just a word of warning about Plex, if you want to steam or transcode 4k content look elsewhere, but for 1080p you will be fine.

Here is a review: techhive.com/art…tml

When you visit the site they offer a 10% off code for joining their newsletter, one unused code which might be good for multiple uses is here: NS10-2GXK-345A-CCGX-G8SY

Any support for security cameras on these?

My sister has her cameras running to it, she has the same model.

Can’t remember how she set it up, could be FTP or via an app, but it does work for her.

Yes, you need to either use the code I linked in the post or get the free code from them via the newsletter sign up
Heat for a fairly easy to use NAS. Gone are the glory days of crazy WD recertified deals but glad to see some good ones crop up occasionally

She says she uses something called Milestone on it to do the CCTV stuff. Not sure if that helps you or not.
Do these have their own software like Synologys DSM and QNAPs version?

They use their own OS, currently it’s on version 3: storagereview.com/wd_…iew

It’s pretty easy to use.

Does anyone know if this NAS is only compatible with WD Blue/Green drives? My 2 bay MyBook Duo won't work with any drives other than the aforementioned.

I'm presuming the other drives (WD red/white labels) need the 3rd pin hack to get it recognised, I could be mistaken so someone correct me if I'm wrong
I had one of these when they first came out, not sure whats what now, but back then, to use plex you had to use the one of a my cloud mirror, incase its still the same and someones stuck.

I have a 20tb one of these. It has reds in it.

I've had mine for about a year. It works great with Plex. You're a bit stuffed if you want to try anything else though.

Anyone thinking of getting one of these should check what it can run because it's a humongously reduced list compared to alternatives. It doesn't bother me. It might you.

I guess it all depends on ones requirements. I just want to backup my files and stream the occasional film on Plex, so for me it's perfect.

Synology does seem to be the market leader, the amount of apps they support is very impressive.

What makes it "100000 times better"? Hardware specs are similar, although I believe the WD has double the ram.

The Synology supports more apps, but if you are only going to use Plex or something that is on both of them anyway why pay an extra £40 for the same thing?

Interesting, I've had this NAS since 2016 and it's never given me a days worth of problems.

Your mileage may vary I suppose.

Everything from Boot times to speed of use, menus, not to mention apps. Add emails to Synology etc, use it for Ondrive and other cloud based data, literally in every single way. I have one of these from years ago and they haven't changed one single bit. Useless. RAM in the Synology is used FAR more efficiently, so don't be put off by that. It's up to you, but you will outgrow the WD very quickly, like in a week. Bearing in mind you have to buy the drives? By the time you do the maths in total, the difference between the 2 in cost will be single percentage points... Synology remote access etc is all free and decent apps, updated all the time, firmware updates and will be supported for years to come. I cannot remember the last time WD did anything? I have an old DLINK NAS and it is miles better than the WD. If you are only going to do movies, then stick a USB Hard drive in the back of your router and save money? They are not even in the same ball park to be honest. Have a Google and see for yourself? There's Value and there's Cheap.... In fairness, the WD is really for home use for Movies, Pic, Music, which you can access via phone or PC, not much use for anything else....
I've used WD for years but had an issue when the password stopped being recognised and couldn't access the unit (mybook live duo) when I tried to install it on a new Mac. I've called and emailed so many times and not once have they replied making the 8tb unit just a brick. I've gone to Synology and have to admit it's amazing. Don't go near WD, trust me they couldn't give a monkeys about helping you when you need them.
I have a 10 year old MyCloud that is not viewable outside of home network. It has two 1tb drives that work as mirrored array.
Can I take them out and simply put them in here to cloud up my storage?

You should be able to do that, yes.
I have to add that although my WD MyBook Duo isn't a NAS I know it custom formats the drives (even if they aren't in a RAID) meaning even if I remove the drive from it in the event of a failure I can't access the drive in a PC or other enclosure. I suspect this could be the same so might be worth checking that before commiting to storing large amounts of data on it.

Correction, looks like most NAS units will try and format the drives before you can use them.

From what I can tell you'd do best taking the drive out, backing it up to another disk and then plugging it in. Well, assuming you want the information off of it of course.

This NAS works with all WD drives. They recommend WD Red, which makes sense as that is their own NAS specific drive.
