I been thinking of getting one of these. Got a toshiba 3TB that is 4 years old. Hardly used. Been sat in my laptop bag as a back up drive and is already knackered. This seems to be a better device. But has apparently been down to £86.
What’s better, this or the seagate for similar money?

My Passport. It's cheaper and is hardware encrypted. Other than that there's really not much of a difference

Most recommendations suggest the wd
I recently purchased this drive for use with my MacBook. Once formatted to 'Mac OS Extended Journaled' (a bit tricky because it wasn't as straightforward as using Disk Utility in the familiar way) it was easy to setup the encryption.

My only complaint about the hardware encryption feature is that the drive encryption password never seems to be saved to the Keychain, so I have to enter the password each time I plug the drive into my MacBook.
Thanks for your answers 🏻
Does this work good with TVs for movies etc?

WD generally have a slightly better reputation than Seagate, especially at the 4tb size.
If you think about reliability - only WD Black or Hitachi HGST. This second is slower than WD Black but according failure ratings - the best one.

Sainsburys has 4TB WD drives going for £75 at the moment. Clearance item so stock may be hard to find but in stock in Stirling yesterday!
I have just had a Seagate external 3.5 inch drive stop responding on windows and won't mount. Are these usb powered ones likely to be more reliable? Cheers

The specifics of power delivery alone are unlikely to affect the reliability of a drive.

Backblaze's hard drive failure stats (most recent for 2018 Q1 backblaze.com/blo…18/) will give you some idea of which drives are less likely to fail based on manufacturer.

No, because it is the same drive inside. They are likely to be less reliable as there is an extra element that may fail, aside from the drive ie the controller in the external drive. However as they are a back up drive rather than used all the time they are likely to be used much less so the failure rate may not be noticed.
