Thought about buying a 250Gb ssd and an enclosure?
Find a good deal on an ssd and you are set. Plus you can install in laptop or desktop later if needed.

I had one but it was a bit clunky in 2.5" enclosure with a rubber casing, it's now in my laptop as a secondary drive so you're absolutely right, making your own is a good option if that could be a possibility

This one is for my brother, he's killed multiple external hard drives because he drops them, so thought i'd get him a fancy one without platters for Christmas!

What circumstance would require an external SSD?

- Super quick transfer times for your data, you can get the most out of it if your laptop/pc/phone has a USB C port
- Shock resistant, no moving parts that could break if you are prone to dropping it/using it for travel
- less likely to lose your data because of this, making them more robust and reliable than a traditional external hard drive
- if you're a DJ or designer and need to bring up files quickly to use with certain programs
- cool and quiet
- they look really sleek and cool

This just came down to £65. Get a decent enclosure maybe metal or rubber if he drops them.

Could be used as external game storage for xbox I believe, would greatly improve loading times on heavy titles

Samsung T5 is a much faster drive. This only support USB 3.1 gen 1, gen 2 is twice as fast up to 10Gbps

says 3.1 gen 2 in the WD description, is it incorrect?

It could. However some titles nowadays would fill this in a flash, gears 4 with 4k update is over 100GB.

I stand corrected then looks like they have update this model to Gen 2. Now it’s a VERY good deal.

Would love 1TB at this price point. I know, I'll come back in few years time!

Thanks for posting! How does this compare to the SanDisc Extreme? The 500GB has dropped to £134, which seems a good price?

Thinking of buying an iMac, thing is the one I'll buy has a fusion drive with only 32GB SSD+1TB HDD, but I need to install Bootcamp Windows so was thinking this might be good to install Windows on? Think it would work? It would stay permanently connected. Could leaving it connected all the time risk damage? To either the drive, ports or iMac?

Presumably it would allow Windows to run a fair bit more speedily than if I were to install Bootcamp on its internal HDD? Would it be worthwhile? Am buying from John Lewis so I cannot configure the iMac's base storage.

Out of stock 🙈

My MacBook Air memory is pretty full with stuff it actually needs? Could this run along side it just by being plugged in via the usb to expand the hard drive ?

Doesn't really matter since you'll never get 10Gbps from that SSD or this one.

You could but then it wouldn't be portable.

I'd be happy with 500GB at this price.
256GB is not worth it for external Imo.
