sorted byIt's down to the generic controller chip they all are based on that has been in use for years (10+ by my own experience). The default setting is always 'cycle through the other settings' which causes the awful seizure inducing flashing. I believe it is possible to link that chip to a separate memory chip but almost no manufacturer does because that would require making custom boards etc rather than using the dirt cheap generic setup that has served the market well for so long.
The chips with inbuilt memory seem to be few and far between so they may be covered by a licensing issue that stops them being as ubiquitous as the non-memory version. Or maybe they require additional circuitry that would be expensive to get certified for each product. One day we will get something better, I hope!
