Pack up your office files and take them home. Carry thousands of songs or pictures. These drives are simple to use, light and easy to carry, and require no power adapter - they are powered directly through the USB cable.Installation is a snap because you don't really "install" this drive; you just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is no CD to install; the included software loads from the drive the first time you plug it in. Powered by the USB bus, so no separate power supply needed. This ultra-portable drive fits easily in your pocket or purse, weighs only a few ounces and holds tons of valuable data.

Welcome to HUKD hoodedclaw ;-)

Anyone got one of these? How easy to remove the drive from the case? Want to stick it in my PS3 and also use it as a portable drive when the need arises.

It lists this at the same price on ebuyer (]http//ww…ves), but then is more if you actually click on it or add it to basket... strange

Ok ignore that, done a refresh and prices showing at the higher price now. Have a screen print if no-one believe me!! :-)

I have one and popped the hdd out the other day. It is the easiest thing to do, there are no screws even - literally you run your fingernail in the crack on the casing and then you pop the top off. There is a narrow circuit board that plugs into the ide connection that you would pop off to get the drive. That's it - no tools - maybe two minutes to pop open the case, take off the usb/ide connector and have the bare drive in your hands.

Super deal. Works out cheaper (per Gig) than the 160GB which I was considering. I don't think I'll miss the 40GB.
This'll go well with my Archos.
Cheers.

Now even less at £55.99 delivered!

Now reduced further to £54.79

even better from ebuyer using the google 10 pounds off down to 47.60 inc del!

Bargain - just bought another one.

Highly recommended. Bought mine for more money a few months ago - excellent value, easy to use. Best of all doesn't need that separate power supply that a 3.5" drive does!

Does anyone know of any other reasonably priced (but larger than 120GB) Bus powered / USB powered external hard drives?

This is just £47.60 delivered using ebuyer and google checkout  !

Ive just ordered one of these too!

does anyone know how many usb ports this uses?

i ask because i am looking at this or the lacie deal at ebuyer
ebuyer.com/UK/…961 (160gb for 64.99)
which shows two cables under the pictures and two ports at the back

and my laptop is getting low on usb's (4 ports)

thanks

Yeah Just one USB port ;-)

The LaCie drive is the same, only needs one port

The WD uses 1, BUT it breaks standard USB current(power) rules. It draws more current than standard USB devices. This may cause it not to be detected on older machines or laptops. Saying that we have 5 of these at work and they are brilliant.

Looks like the Lacie comes with a cable for power, although it says it's host-powered. Probably for non-powered hubs. Check the manual at

I bought one last time around and use it all the time. Great speed transfer.

thankyou

dipenchi, the Lacie uses 2 USB sockets (as most of the portable 2.5" drives do). Thats what it means be host powered. You can see the twin usb cables on the extra photos on Ebuyer.

The 4-pin connection provides data and power, however, from what i've read some systems limit power to the ports, in which case the power cable is also required. there are other devices which are host powered which only require the single cable
