Same price in store at PC world. I was almost at the till with one but couldn't work out the physical dimensions(box was sealed) so wanted to check online.

i'm looking to buy a dvd player that plays through usb (the phillips one from argos)

will this play ok or do i need to get a harddrive with an external power source

(people on the other thread seem to say your better to get one that has its own power)

sorry to sound thick

Not a great deal for this price, I got a 500Gb drive for £60 about 6 months ago.

Try comparing like with like. Your 500GB drive was of the larger 3.5" type which requires an external power supply. The smaller 2.5" drives like this are more expensive in terms of £'s/GB.

Getting fed up with people rushing to vote cold without understanding the deal.. Clearly mentioned in the title as "pocket sized" unless you've big enough pocket to fit a 500GB 3.5" drive

Agreed, suprising difference when you see the two next to each other.

there will always those who don't know or even care the difference between 4 oz burger and a 4 oz fillet steak. All they care is 4 oz of meat. This one is a hot deal as it is 10% cheaper than norm. For hard disks this is significant.

Whether an external hard drive will work in your dvd player depends on how much power the USB port can provide and how much the USB drive requires. If the dvd player can't pump enough juice through its USB port you'd be stuck. Having said that I've had no problems with a similar setup/

A drive that had a power supply would definitely work.

Try it and see?

thanks for that

i have neither the dvd player or drive yet

just wanted to get them both so i could watch ahem flash gordon etc straight from usb without any jumping

If anyone else is interested in the physical dimensions of this drive as the 4.9 x 4.9 x 4.9cm on the amazon site is clearly rubbish. It's:

Height 17.8 mm (Max)
Length 124.4 mm (Max)
Width 78.6 mm
Weight 0.155 kg

It won'tl work with the Philips DVD player as you need a powered external harddrive as the DVD will not provide enough power. Even with a 3.5" powered HDD you will need to partition it, because iirc, the Philips can only take storage up to 32gb

I reckon you'll be fine if you use a flash drive to watch movies from. I use a flash drive to watch films via my Pioneer DVD player (Pioneer DV600) and it works fine. I also use my flash drive to listen to music via my Yamaha Amp (Yamaha RXN 600D). I've got a WD 120GB Passport HDD, but neither the Pioneer or Yamaha is able to interface with it.

Good luck

I know it isn't the solution you are considering, but I use both an external harddrive and a USB stick for playing through my XBox 360. This has plenty power through its USB sockets.

Back at £49.99 delivered.

Yes^ you have to concentrate on the fact that It's a good deal for the compact size and obviously competitive. If you're looking for a big ext. HDD the same brand has one just £10 extra for 500GB at ebuyer, but here you're paying for the portability and that's important factor. This is a good deal for 160GB in your pocket.

That will work lovely with Time Machine on my macbook.
Thanks to OP

Well I bit the bullet and picked one up from PC World at the same price. I'm pretty happy with it. case is plastic but feels durable enough. Just plain silver with a WD logo on the top.

One day I'm going to read a thread about a USB-powered hard drive and not have to endure comments like this.
One day...

If you have a local PCWorld you would be just as well getting it there... Both same price, but with PCW you can have it same day and would be easier to get a refund/replacement if something went wrong with the drive (which it shouldnt, anytime soon... WD drives are good!)

^^^^ its this price in Currys too

edit: and 3% quidco on reserve and collect too.

Nice one, just what I needed for my son who has filled his laptop hard drive up.

can u open it up to take out the 2.5 drive?

Just got one of these from PC World. Great buy!

Now back at £49.99. Just ordered one from Amazon.
