Pack up your office files and take them home. Carry thousands of songs or pictures. These drives are simple to use, light and easy to carry, and require no power adapter - they are powered directly through the USB cable.Installation is a snap because you don't really "install" this drive; you just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is no CD to install; the included software loads from the drive the first time you plug it in. Powered by the USB bus, so no separate power supply needed. High-performance portable storage for your Mac and PC. Light andrugged, it’s easy to carry and no external power adapter isneeded. Comes with sync & encryption and Google software. WDXMS1600TE
So much so that I actually decided to buy one. Having read the reviews on Amazon though I'm in 2 minds now. There seems to be a worrying number of people reporting faults.
Still a good spot though. Thanks.
I have to say the WD Synch software you get with it seems good at first, you can;
Synch your internet favourites, Mail, Document folders, have them encrypted and password protected.
But I find it annoyingly slow !! I have 90gb stored on mine and each time I synch it checks every folder which takes hours before it even gets to the data it needs to copy across. Obvisouly the encryption takes some time but I'm not sure you can turn it off.
There seems to be an issue with copying data from the WD to another PC, it wasnt happy when I plugged it back into the original PC & wiped the drive clean automatically!
I never can 'safely remove device' either, It is always busy doing something even after synch has finished. As soon as you disconnect the drive stops spinning - dodgy?
This is a hot deal for the price per GB & if anyone buys it can they let me know if they use different backup software or just drag and drop data onto the drive?
Anyone reading reviews that you need a usb booster cable should be able to get one for free (after you buy the drive) by phoning WD(UK) on this number: 01372 360055
I think you can probably get a separate free app to hide your porn, oooops I mean personal data.
I would like to know this as well.. Anyone? :-(
I understand its a Scorpio drive inside so possibly is a SATA. (However 160Gb is the largest PATA Scorpio drive they do) ]Info Here:
Jon.
Seems it's SATA - see thread link for details:

Cheers! Now I can buy one for my PS3 :thumbsup:
Thanks for the info, need a bigger drive for my laptop so I can swap them over!
On some laptops the drive will require 2 usb ports to power it. The booster basically splits the cable to use 2 usb ports.

If you get yourselves out to Iraq you can get the tax off so I got it for £44 quid.
There are obviously some down sides though....:p
