I've been looking for a 2TB NAS for a while and I ended up ordering the Lacie 2TB one from DABS as it was the cheapest for nearly £485. That was last week.

After placing the order, DABS messed me around doing their security checks then after few days they told me it's not in stock and they have to order it so I cancelled the order and started looking elsewhere.

Luckily, that was the day when Western Digital released their first 2TB NAS. I was prepared to pay more money for the WD as it's my favourite but to my surprise it was much cheaper than the Lacie, at only £415 from Amazon.

I ordered on Friday and received the fantastic drive Saturday morning and I've been using it all weekend. A fantastic drive by all means. I use it to stream media to my main media centre in the living area and eventually it will also stream to another media centre and maybe an xbox 360 (as an extender).

So, here is the link if anyone is interested.

Do you need to install a software on the PCs it's connected to or is it viewable by any device on the same network by IP address?

It is viewable by any device on the same network by IP address and by name too, without installing any software.

You can, however, install a software called WD World Access, that comes with it and allows you to access it from anywhere in the world but I didn't bother installing it yet.

it also comes with a backup software that I also didn't bother installing. I may have a look at it sometime this year ;-)

Basically, you just connect it to your hub/router,...etc or even to one of the PCs in your network and it's accessible ;-)

The interesting thing about this drive is that it runs Linux so I believe the firmware should/will be open-source.

I think the 1TB version is £168, so cheaper to buy two of those?

can i ask a silly question. it's included the VAT . i saw the WD 500G only £74? cheers

There are some advantages to having only one 2TB unit over 4x500GB units, but at the current prices, I think a lot of people will be reluctant to shell out. I will admit that it is a cracking product though, but I honestly don't think that the majority people will reap the benefits of NAS just yet.

£400+ is a lot of cash to spend when storage drops in price per GB so fast. I voted hot still, because I appreciate that 2TB in one lump (regarless of number of physical disks inside the unit) is impressive.

So what is the question? :-D

what's nice about this particular one is that it has gigabit ethernet.

not a bad price considering you'd be lucky to get a 1tb drive without the enclosure for 200ukp.

You can get a 1TB drive for £200 dead on at OcUK at present and £184 at eBuyer

Does this have DLNA or what ever it is as I need a media server for my PS3.
