I know some people here will say this is expensive. Read 1st before voting cold or whatsoever. This is a deal for those who have old lappy with IDE connection and need more spaces in the lappy. The other cheapest i could find is £70 plus including delivery at the end of the total cost.

Spend money extending obsolete old gear? No way.

Buy an external USB 2 disk (maybe a 2.5" one) (some posted this week) for the extra space then at least it will still be some use when your old laptop gives up the ghost!

Hold your horses, it can save money sometimes. I was half contemplating this the other day to upgrade a venerable usb drive I have with FW800 ports. These still cost the earth and it would have doubled the current capacity for rather less than the cost of the same drive (now SATA) with the same sized drive inside.

I am going to wait for the 500GB drives to drop a little further in price and buy a new one of those with said port. Cheapest is £80 on fleabay for the Iomega eGO, but reviews are not glowing.

Yeah, and it's effectively still as old as the rest of the hardware is If it does pack in, then the drives are all but usesless for putting with new kit. It might be that with very specialist gear, say part of a specialised system that would ALL need upgrading it might well be the only way out, but not as the OP suggested.

In the originally case as suggested, a new laptop can be got for 230 quid upwards that odds on will be better than an old laptop that has tiddly little IDE drives, so paying far more than it is worth in the hope it will last is just mad, and I can't see it any other way.
Would you pay 60 quid to repair an old 14" TV when a new TFT 19" one is available for say 180? Pretty much the same sort of thing.

Repairing and upgrading any electronic stuff other than if it is very recent is rarely very cost effective now :-(

They are all ROHS compliant these days, and very recyclable!
