Do you know if the HDD from these can be removed?

Great price but I'm torn (Synology NAS box currently has 2x8TB WD Reds in it, looking to go up to 2X12TB or larger..)!

If you wanted to build a cheap Nas, what would you use for these? Need more Plex storage. Was thinking of HP Proliant

HP Microserver was the go to option for years due to small footprint, low power, highly versatile and with cashback offers the amazing price. Depends just how much power you need from it, physical size and price now though. The Microservers are still great, the old N36/N40/N54L models can still perform adequately, are easy to work with and cheap, but if using for Plex and want to use up to 4K then I reckon you would need more than they offer.
It gone totally bad today
Humm buy now or wait to black Friday to see if there is any better deals. Need it for the Xbox one so looking for a 8tb drive as I believe 8tb is the max size it will recognize.

I agree. I've seen a few myself, but I posted this really early this morning and it only recently got approved. Something odd going on with moderation.
Ordered this morning and shucked it this evening.

I had a white label drive inside the caddy and wouldn't power up once installed in my PC.

Quick search and came across the 3.3 volts 3rd pin issue and a couple of tricks to get around it.

I got a little impatient with the tape method so took the nuclear option and took a scalpel to the third pin and viola! Working fine :-)

Warranty? what warranty? :-)

Thanks for posting OP!

Size isn't an issue as it's in the garage, also I don't do that much transcoding as most is watched locally in the house on a shield. I was wondering if something has replaced them or are they still the go to boxes?
Whats inside these? Reds?

Have looked online, people state white labelled Reds. Does this mean they're Red equivalent with all the same NAS tech?

You could if you did need to transcode put plex server on the shield and use that as I think you can do a few transcodes on that.

From the information I have seen yes it is.

I strongly advise against this. The Seagate contains a woefully slow drive (sadly I have one to backup my NAS).
The WD appears to contain enterprise-level white-labelled drives, or an actual WD Red drive, which is what I trust in my NAS. Though I read this the Red are becoming less common.

I had a quick Google, and this thread appears to contain a caveat about using the white label drives in a NAS - something about TLER in the top comment. I gave up reading as I'm not actually buying one, but I'd certainly read on if I were!

Most are using consumer grade NAS, e.g. all Synologys or most QNAPs that use software Raid so don’t need the TLER feature of WD Red (that’s for hardware Raid) and can use any disk they like. There are much better options for the home than noisy, hot, power hungry data center-designed Reds IMO.
Anyone got one and confirm what drive is in it as need tler support.

This is essentially my setup. I have the HP ProLiant MicroServer G7 N40L, with 2*2TB and 1*4TB HDD's. Plex is installed on my Shield and it runs 4K content just fine.

Oh that’s neat.
I am also curious as to which drives are in these? Thanks.

When I shuck them I will let you know, unless someone else beats me to it.
