Is this actually any good as a NAS?

This version does not have the app support of newer versions eg kodi app.

Please can you confirm the newer version

These are pretty weak , you do get value thru the included drive , but the CPU is normally the weakest link. Low power CPu so not very flexible, no real apps to speak of. Even the apps that are there eg PLEX may not work ....

I dont know, but not this one.

Hi, I was wondering if this is good for streaming TV shows to my android device? I'm not really too bothered for Plex or such.

will it be able to stream home videos to a smart tv or is it just a storage device? can you're phone send videos / pics to the nas drive?

My phone has too many pics and i need to backup now!

Yes it can. Once on the drive, you can access them via a variety of different ways. The WD Cloud app means you can access them away from home too.

I have all my film and music collection on the drive, and I access it through my Samsung Smart TV built in DLNA streaming. You can have it as your itunes server as well.

wow - many thanks lump. That's what I'm after then.
Do you recommend a particular hard drive size or is the 4gb sufficient?
I was looking at Maplins for this model but it is discontinued and not available generally.
Western Digital do a new model - are they as good as the old one?

cheers

I would go maybe for 4 TB instead of GB

Obviously, the bigger the better. I still have another, separate portable hard drive with a backup of mine.

I don't have any experience of the new version, but I can't fault our one which I presume is the older version. It just works really well.
