I have this, its quite slow at transferring data but for the price its good

Shame I bought one last week at £52.

Would love to get this but I have the MJ 500 GB drive on its way. It would of been possible if Amazons site was any good. 2 days straight of "dispatching soon" so I was unable to cancel. Pointless.

I recently bought it for £56.90!
So far, it's ok...transfer speed is reasonable....quiet...good buffering ...Full HD stream fine.

Scorchio

Hot as its the first 1tb external I can recall below £50.

No Play.com had one for about £40 2 weeks ago. That got took down pretty quickly though, play.com must have accidentally posted it so low; so you maybe half-right, as this is probably is the first 1tb external that has been intentionally priced below £50.

Perfect timing
A colleague just asked me to get him a 1TB Ext HDD.

I need an external HDD for my PS3 (playTV takes up massive amounts of space before anybody asks why).
If I get this HDD and format it to Fat32, will;
i) The ps3 recognise a drive of this size?
ii) There will be 1tb of space available? (as I have read that I may lose a lot of space if I format it to Fat32).

And also how difficult is it to format to Fat32 using XP? As I'm assuming that this HDD will be formatted to NSTF out of the box

great deal just ordered with prime so should be with me tommorow

Basic question - whats the use of AC adapter. Is it not going to work with the USB cable to my laptop?

The Play deal was legit - I received mine 3 days after I ordered. The deal was part of their clearance sale, so I'd be surprised if they had more than a handful in stock. There was similar situation with there portable drives in the sale (they sold in a matter of minutes). It would be nice if Play indicated stock levels on their site .

Re: PlayTV - you can't record directly to an external hd - but you can transfer your recordings to an external hd. Or you can install a larger internal hd.

dodoegg everything will be ok ..i use this same one with my ps3 with no problem

This is a 3.5 hard drive. It will work with your laptop but it requires it's own power source, hence the a.c. adapter.
A 2.5 drive (smaller) can be powered without an adapter.

Theres some bad reviews on Amazon. Lots of complaints of HD failure. Is this drive any less reliable than other comparible ones available?

lol!

It happened that everytime there was an offer on hotukdeals..I'd buy one saying to myself that this is not gonna get cheaper for atleast two months..but it just gets better and better at hotukdeals..Its not about the affordability but rather there exists no benefit in buying more drives when i could not fill up the current ones..lol

Tesco has this too, i think it might be £10 more though, still not bad

which is better, this 'elements' range or the 'my book' range posted here ?

I'll paste my reply in from the other thread, in the event it is useful for people.

The My Book have a light on the front and come with back-up software. The Essential, has neither.

I have a 2TB My Book, a 1TB My Book and a 1.5TB Essential.

The My Book sits nicely like a book in my TV stand, but personally, I like the simplicity of the Essential much, much more. Both power down with inactivity/shutdown as well, which is something I couldn't do without any more.

Hope this helps.

of course Western Digital Elements.
go wdc.com check it, hope you can find something called 'office edtion' ;p

I bought 1 from Amazon at Xmas, great drive and no problems at all despite some of the bad reviews it seems to have had.

Just ordered. Returning the portable MJ drive. For a extra £10 ish I get double the capacity. Portable and USB power are not needed as this will be sat on top of the PC. May get a USB compatible DVD player for the bedroom though. Would this work like I expect ?. Plug in and DVD should play off it ?.

Great find. Thanks

Just bought one, it is a reliable drive, my dad has 2 a 500gb and 320gb and neither have let him down or had any sort of problems.

was looking at the MJ 500gb portable but this seems the better deal if you are going to be operating it indoors near a plug socket..... heat added.. another £50 on my credit card!!

Is this just like a normal SATA hard disk with an enclosure? I.e. can you open it up and put in a bigger hard disk if you wanted to?
