Manufacturer's Description
WD Elements Desktop External Drive - simply affordable
Western Digital's WD Elements Desktop USB 2.0 external hard drives are the right answer for simple, reliable add-on storage. Simply plug one into a USB port and start saving your photos, music, video, and files. Designed with the same commitment to quality that made WD external drives the number one selling drives in the world, the WD Elements comes with plug-and-play simplicity, meaning you just have to connect the power and plug it into a USB port to instantly add more storage to your computer.

Designed to save power
The WD Elements Desktop turns on and off with your computer and enters idle mode when not in use - it also utilises a WD drive with power-saving WD GreenPower Technology and an EnergyStar compliant power supply. Environmental sustainability is important to us at Western Digital. One of the best ways we can make a positive impact on the environment is to offer products that consume less electricity. To that end, WD has designed eco-friendly hard drives with WD GreenPower Technology for WD desktop, enterprise, CE and external hard drive products.

Based on extensive customer input toward supporting ENERGY STAR 4.0 compliance and incorporating the latest in engineering technology, we developed this platform to bring more energy efficient hard drive options to our customers.

As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. Currently available 1 TB hard drives have a typical power consumption rating greater than 13.5 watts. WD has designed the first 3.5-inch hard drives that deliver power savings as the primary attribute. IntelliPower and IntelliPark are two examples of technologies that enable the WD GreenPower Technology platform.

GreenPower technology is designed with the environment in mind.IntelliPower
A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. For each drive model, WD may use a different, invariable RPM.

Drives featuring WD GreenPower Technology consume less current during start up, allowing more drives to spin up simultaneously resulting in faster system readiness - a big plus for enterprise customers.

IntelliPark
IntelliPark delivers lower power consumption by automatically unloading recording heads during idle periods to reduce aerodynamic drag, and disengages read/write channel electronics.

Earth-friendly packaging
Packaged in minimised, eco-friendly, recyclable packaging made from recycled materials, the WD Elements Desktop is pre-formatted for PCs. Designed for use with Windows-based computers, it can also be easily reformatted for use with Macs.

For additional storage capacity, check out the WD Elements Desktop 1.5TB.

Original Poster

Just have a quick flick through user reviews on the amazon link...

just sue the search funcition this drive gets posted every ten days or look at the amazon reviews.

pros good brand, good price for a basic hd.

cons some negative comments about noise and it getting hot due to casing being plastic.

Good deal but read the amazon reviews if that worried.

thanks for the suggestions guys....

also ebuyer has some end user reviews of the same product if still unsure..

should be quite ok, as opposed to the seagate expansion that seemed to suffer from the click of death very quickly!

I would have to add the terribly-slow transfer rate, as the ELEMENTS is the lowest grade in the WD family.
For heat issue: if you place it in a well-ventilated place or have the opportunity to place it on a metallic surface to act as a heat sink, that should help a bit (heat transfer by conductivity [solid to solid] is better than convection [solid to fluid, especially air in stagnant state]).
Noise issue: just place it somewhere where you can't hear it :P

E-buyer are known for disthcing unfavourable reviews and in the end its more about people saying how great everything is. Amazon I think let the product sink or swim.

Thank you just ordered.

just to let you know ithis has been the price of this hdd for about 4 weeks now anyway to get quicker speed transfer rates on elements drive i found that format it before use and it kind of makes it quicker i found speed improvements on there 2.5 inch drives i hope this helps:)X)

Would recommend getting 2.5 inch drive instead. They are smaller, more convenient and work from USB power. This one requires external power source.
2.5 would be more expensive.

cheers, ordered one

does this work a ps3 as an external drive

ordered last week when it was £51.90. not received yet though

price seems to fluctuate

got mine delivered today

Western Digital .... My book = Reliable. Elements = Not so much!

Does this use a HDMI cable?

i just read this on amazon reviews !!!! anyone recieved theres ? is this true ?

Ships with French AC adaptor that contradicts printed documentation., 31 Jan 2010

This review is from: Western Digital Elements 1.5TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive - Black (Electronics)
The very first panel of the WD's printed instruction leaflet shows an AC adaptor with interchangable "prongs" to allow use all around the world, making the AC adaptor compatable with 16 different countries sockets. What you actually get is a non-interchangable, hard moulded two-prong variety, that you will need to plug into a "shaver" adapter to use in the UK (unless you plan on using it in your bathroom). Since this was bought and shipped from Amazon.co.uk (emphasis on the .co.uk bit) I assumed it would be a UK model with a UK plug. If they're selling us the French model, it might be nice to mention it in the product blurb, or to throw in a free adaptor (from french 2-prong to uk 3-prong). Will be contacting Amazon to see how they feel about the suggestion. Product OK (four stars so far) Amazon's part in the process, not OK.

**** UPDATE ****

Amazon agreed to refund 15% of the unit's cost so that I could source my own UK AC Adaptor. Western Digital's technical support took about 4 days (not bad given most places) to come back to me regarding the undocumented AC Adaptor, suggesting I purchase a UK one - not offering to supply the one listed in the product's manual. The WD's UK "accessories" store they suggested I visit doesn't sell ANY AC adaptors however, suggesting that perhaps there aren't any... and possibly never were. Anybody out there own a UK AC adaptor for these things? Until Western Digital can figure out which country uses which plug, and supply the right "accessories" (is it still an accessory if it's vital?) I can't recommened this product. Amazon's customer service was excellent as usual, but I'd avoided a Marketplace Seller to avoid hassle like this.

AVOID.

USB-powered drives are far slower....
unless you're talking about SSD ! but that's a different league

The first time I plugged my one in the AC adaptor blew up in spectacular style. I rang them and they seemed pretty evasive about the problem. I gave up complaining and purchased a multi-AC adaptor thingy and it works fine.

no, not unless you've got a copy of homebrew, the Wii USB can only be used for the chargers and keyboard for using the internet...

does this work a ps3 as an external drive

As far as I was aware, as long as the drive is formatted properly (I think it's FAT32) and is usb, any external drive is useable with PS3?

Does anyone know if the HDD can be taken out of these and the enclosure be used to house another 3.5" drive?

It's on the compatibilty list.

Wii Hard drives

1TB is serious overkill for a Wii.

You can fit around 100 games on a 320GB drive, and there isn't 100 decent games, so few people are going to spend this amount on a hard drive for their Wii even though £ per GB it is of better value.

That is correct.

HDMI is for connecting Audio/Video Components - this hard drive would be using a USB cable and the product comes with the correct cable to attach to a PC/Console.

yeah but you have to format it to fat32 so you cant store things bigger than 4gb

This drive is amazing, i got it from when the pixmania deal was on, its so super quiet!! And those saying it gets hot, your going mad. Mine is warm to the touch, so much so i thought it wasn't on and that it had gone to sleep!!

To answer my own question, I now have the 2TB version of this drive in my PC as of 15 minutes ago.

The enclosures have no screws, so you have to "pop" them open.
I haven't put my old drive in the enclosure yet, but see no reason why it won't accept it.

Any links where we can learn more about it please?

Brother was after a external drive and always like wd ones, so will get him this one.

Just received mine after ordering at lunchtime on14/07. Great. Hot Hot Hot

Hoe do you format to Fat32?

Only get USB-powered, i.e. portable, if you really need it, it'll cost probably double, if not more, and all you're saving is not having to plug it in.

FAT32 format with this : ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/ind…htm

now £51.99

hi all does this use wires from a plug? i really need to get one but im looking for somthing portable
