I paid £69.99 ebuyer/google checkout two weeks ago. It's nice looking and smaller than you would expect from the picture. My 320gb and 300gb hds have larger cases.

Out of interest, how long did eBuyer take to get the drive to you.

I've read a few comments this week in relation to HD-TV products where poor customer service at eBuyer has meant those parties not wanting to use eBuyer again.

BFN,

Payday soon...

I bought this one off Amazon a few weeks ago (£79.99) and can vouch for it being a nice bit of kit. To echo what stated above I too was impressed with the size of the unit.

Anything like quidco to use for amazon these days?

Quite interested in this, my 250gig western digital is pretty full these days.

mine arrived in 2 days from ebuyer

This is a nice external drive, compact and quiet..

however two things you should know about it.

1) Its not maufactured by WD - its uses a WD drive though.

2) The unit does not have a power switch - You have to unplug it to power it down.

How much space do you actually end up with?

Looking at mine it says
Capacity 500,096,991,232 bytes

Ah you asked "how much do you end up with" - as always, you fill the damn things, so you still end up with little or no free space

It is a nice and quiet drive, powers itself down when not in use and doesn't get hot.

Mine was £74 from ebuyer with the 10 quid off from google and 5 day delivery.

So, according to your capacity and my calculations via Google...

((500 096 991 232 / 1 024) / 1 024) / 1 024 = 465.751617 = (rounded down two 2dp) 465.75GB

This looks quite good.

Regarding being "pre-formatted". Amazon reviews state this needs to be formatted to NTFS.

Can someone clarify what that means please?

what operating system do you use.
if its xp or higher, its simply a case of plugging it in, if its not already formatted, go through the wizard and select format to ntfs

Oh, i'm xp.

Can anyone confirm if this has an on/off switch… thanking you :santa:

So it doesn't have a cooling fan?
Has anybody checked to see what drive is in the 500GB version?

I don't know.

If it does it is too quiet to hear.

If it doesn't then the drive still doesn't get hot.

The drive spins down when not in use.

Thanks. I ordered one from Ebuyer at £70 and don't want to keep it if it's noisy.
