Thanks for the feedback & welcome to HUKD The Explorer

30-odd quid more and you can get the 500gb with firewire too.

warm.

What benefits does the firewire offer? My camcorder is firewire, could I dump the contents of a mini-dv to the hard disk?

Are these solely USB-powered or do they require connection to the mains too?

Nope, the main benefit of firewire is that it's faster than USB2 by requiring less CPU overheard. A USB connection is master/slave with the CPU doing all the work but a firewire connection is peer to peer with each device doing some of the work hence the generally higher cost.

For your camcorder you also have the benefit that over firewire your PC can drive the camera which means it can automatically rewind and play or you can manually control it using controls on your PC.
