The 250GB one shown above runs on USB power - No plug required!
This is the Elements version NOT Home version

I have the 320GB which is black which is different to 320GB of one shown above in the "LINK". these drives are tiny and light. I thought the box was empty when I bought these from Currys for circa £50

Oh no it doesn't. I have the 1TB Elements drive and it is definitely a 3.5" drive requiring a power brick as the 7200rpm spin speed in the title might have indicated. The 2.5" portable drives are called Passport and run at 5400rpm.

Check the specs in the link.

Er, no. This one needs the mains - check out the spec on Novatech. It's a big beast too :

Width 12.46 cm
Depth 20.38 cm
Height 3.61 cm
Weight 1020 kg

Although I think they've got the weight wrong there!

Bought one a couple of weeks ago for £40. Good deal.

I have bought a couple in the past and what I have a rule of thumb of is that 3.5 inch mains powered ones are spindle speed of 7200 rpm, 2.5 inch usb powered have a spindle speed of 5400 rpm. From the spec I then assume it is the larger 3.5 inch mains powered type which are generally cheaper size for size and not as portable.
The 2.5 inch USB powered ones are exellent in My opinion.

These are the desktop 3.5inch versions

Wrong picture I think ...

thanks repped

These WD "elements" external drives are known to be temperamental (e.g. prone to failure) - certainly in the case of the US versions... a good price to be honest
