It reserves @ £59.99, so that's the price you pay on collection.

I certainly didn't, but then I also don't use PC World.

Dont forget you can get 2.5% Quidco cashback on collect at store sales.

Do these My Books generally use SATA or PATA drives?

2.5% quidco too.

Wish I had the money but just bought a 750 gb samsung internal to replace an old maxtor that failed...

Also at dixons for £59.99 - 4% quidco, however you have to pay postage of £4.95 as there are no Dixons stores anymore (I think).

Shame they are not bus powered

No problem reserved OK. Are these any good, anyone own one?

They are one of the better makes when it comes to external drives for reliability and use.

Currys got stock too...

cant get Preston to come up in the store selector for some reason, really annoying :x

Isn't the Play one better value for money? Buffalo 1TB for £74.99.

Price wise then yes, but Buffalo don't get very good reviews, so reliability and quality no.

Have to agree, I have 2 ext hdd's, 1 a Buffallo tother a WD MyBook, the Buffallo has been nothing but trouble to the point I unplugged it and let it gather dust, never again. In contrast the WD MyBook has been flawless, wish I'd bought that first.... hindsight :whistling:

Western Digital has been, in my experience, very reliable. Unlike IBM(now Htiachi) and Maxtor (who are awful).

I've used many different HD enclosures and the WD one is by far the best. It doesn't make much noise, it doesn't vibrate too much and best of all, it'll spin down the HD when it's not in use. Most of the 3rd party enclosures that I've used just keep the drives spinning and are sometimes picky about which OS they work with.

I'd debate that, they're noisy but I've been though about 10-15 ISE and SATA Maxtor's and never had a problem with any of them.

The debate continues...

I think its the same with most HD purchases. You can get very unlucky with any make - but the odds are better with certain brands than others.

Maxtor would be the worst - WD one of the best.

There is always a chance your drive will fail its just the type of technology. Problem then becoes that you need 2 - one to store the stuff on and one for imaging the storage.

I've been using RAID since it was built into mobo's mostly 0 for speed but 1 for the OS partition. I just wish they'd add more than 4 SATA slots as standard and dump RAID 5 and/or 10 on there too.

Can anyone tell me whether these are delivered FAT32 or NTFS formatted? If the former are they straightforward to re-format NTFS?

It should be FAT32, but it's easy to reformat.

May be cheap for a 640, but the 1TB drives posted here look much better value for an extra £20

I paid 55 quid for 320gb about 5 months ago.

My 250 gig one cost me £55 this time last year... prices have dropped fast. Not sure how long it can last! :whistling:

i couldnt decide whether i want this one or the 500gb Home Edition? in the end after reading around i think im gonna go for this one, its cheaper and im pretty sure it does what i want in a HDD. Hot

Been looking for my first HDD and finally took the plunge and bought this. Hope it doesn't fail, lol. Thanks OP, H+R !!!

Am I right in saying I wouldn't have to plug this in to the mains, just USB?

I have a Dell laptop and my 80GB memory is nearly full so was hoping this will be ok.

Couldnt resist any longer, just reserved 1, gr8 value on a qual portable HDD imo.

Cheers Op

My current 500gb Western Digital requires plugging into the mains VV, I assume the MyBook 640Gb will be similar....but dont quote me on that :whistling:
