This is the cheapest that I can find for a My Passport 500GB at the moment. It's the updated model which I don't think has been officially released yet, hence the shipping delay from Amazon. Next best I can find for a My Passport 500GB is £69.99 for the old black version on Amazon and Ebuyer. The new 500GB is also available in red for £69.99 or blue for £89.99.

Update: it's now changed to out of stock, but you can still place an order - but there's no indication of how long you'll likely have to wait

Delivery between 2-5 weeks.

Probrably a pre-order. You can bet that when the new model comes out, the old model will have offers.

This is the new model, available in five colours: just search amazon for WDBAAA5000

Prices for other colours are:
Red and silver is £69.99
Black £74.99
Blue £84.99 (the one I'm after - typical )

Does anyone know what the differences are with "the new model"?
(Having just opened my new 320GB black one!).

Might not be important to everyone, but it's worth getting a drive that supports eSATA if your PC supports it. Much faster than USB.

Hot, but for £5 more you get this one with eSATA:

cracking price for this new model

Super. Think i'll get one of these, look nice on top of the Wii.

I'm holding out for a 1TB 2.5" drive for
laze

Could someone confirm if this would be a good idea for me.

At the moment i have quite an old computer (I have a laptop as well) that has lots of photographs and all my itunes music.

i am scared the computer is suddenly going to fail as it is so old and full up. Thinking of getting one of these to put photos and itunes music onto and then deleting them all from my computer. I would also consider getting a second one of these just to act as a back up for the first as whilst i hear they are very reliable i have nothing backed up at the moment and like anything i guess this could fail at some time.

Would this be a good idea or should i be going down another avenue. The price looks good for me to get 2.
Thanks

Count yourself lucky you haven't lost everything yet! Always have at least two copies of irreplaceable files. I'd back everything up to DVD-R as well as on one/two of these drives.

I would say the best thing for you to do would be to get en external drive such as this, backup all of your photos and music onto it and keep the original versions on your current PC. Just because it's old and full up doesn't mean it's particularly likely to suddenly fail.

But on top of that you also really need copies of everything important on DVD, because if you get a virus that wipes out your data whilst the external drive is connected then you could lose both copies anyway. Preferably keep the DVD backups at a friend/family member's house just in case you ever have a fire or something that could destroy your PC and any nearby media.

Stumped up for the red version in the end - a bit too late for the white. Will be scratched up good within a month anyway!

20% Smaller, a bit curvier, and body coloured bumper (the bit around the edge). I don't know if the light on the side is new or not. A BRIGHT GREEN BOX!! Also some new hardware encryption thing. Overall not too different from the old models, which still look fantastic.

This isn't in stock.

I've just placed an order but i would like to know if anyone has received an estimated delivery date?

I placed an order for the 320GB version when that was cheap (a week or two before this deal) and that's despatched today, so I would guess Amazon should begin to get these in stock soon.

ah sorry, i cancelled it and ordered a WD element for £70 instead, It came up as currently available to me this morning? So i thought theres going to be a long long wait.

Thanks for the reply and i voted hot especially if you can wait.

hmm ... Amazon just cancelled my order . I assume the rest of you guys are in the same position?

Mine cancelled as well - though looking on the site they do seem to have the blue one of the same shape in stock, but at a higher price that the white one we ordered.

I see the link on this page to amazon points to a 320GB one now (though not available) - may-be that price was supposed to be for 320GB rather than 500GB.

my order was also cancelled. The item is no longer on Amazon so this needs to be expired.
