Out of curiosity, what's the difference, retail and component?

Retail comes in a box meant for retail shelves.

Component is just a bare drive. Technically no difference except the box and price. However, amazon have been known to sell bare drives here which have a US warranty sometimes or those versions can only be replaced by amazon and not WD. This is because Amazon buys them in bulk as OEM drives so WD isn’t responsible for the warranty. Hope I was able to explain properly.

Shows £70.97 for me.
For that price I'd buy a bigger one.
The fact hat it says NAS drive, does that mean you can't just use it as a drive in your computer?

Is there a difference?

FWIW, I am a long-standing techie, but just want some clarification.

TIA

Yeah can use it for anything just usually rated for longer term or higher usage.

Gotcha. Cheers.

They don't muck around with stuff like error correction etc?

I know "surveillance" drives are rated higher, but would tweak the ECC bits to make sure the data got onto the drives quicker...

TIA
I've gone for this instead.

Good price but not a NAS drive - WD Blue which is the equivalent is a cheaper drive.

I've gone for the Red 2TB - cheers OP!
re WD Warranty (3 years)... when you get the drive and know its serial number you can check/register at:
support.wdc.com/war…=en

eg A month ago bought 2 x2TB drives [albeit from ebuyer.com] for £71 (best price at the time) which were just anti-static bagged [advertised by ebuyer site as 3yr warranty] and they showed warranty/registered there just fine.
I think I bought an oem red from amazon sometime ago, I wasn't happy with the way it was packed being a sensitive component.

But its still working fine today.

This is essential with amazon as they sell fake, repaired drives and overseas. Check its not been registered already, also amazon returns are atrocious for hard drives after 3months! Takes the ......

Theres a lot of choice out there so it depends whether you want a basic file storage system or something with a few more features like Media Server etc.

Anything from Synology you can't go wrong with but they're not cheap and if you aren't going to use all the features then there's better options out there.

Have a look at the Synology DS218j as a current option. To be honest though you could get last year's model (DS217j or even previous to that DS216j) a bit cheaper and for what you need it for it will be fine.
