I have one of these and I like it! It's eased me in gently to the world of NAS You can put Plex on it, though the player on the other end has to be powerful enough to be able to play the original file as this is not powerful enough to do video conversion on-the-fly. It's really quiet too.

Thanks, not had a NAS before so it's good to know what others think of it and how they use it
Think it is okay for media...but just remember if your network is compromised the data is open to the world wide web if connected to the net 24/7

Ah, so movies and non important stuff can go on here. The rest on the cloud?
Much better getting a old workstation and running unraid... Does this come with no drives included?
Diskless?!! I don’t understand

Why do you say that, surely this way uses more electricity and you need to find the software to run?

It's an enclosure. Have to buy drives separately as with any enclosure, same with Synology and Terramaster

Indeed, plus having to pay for an unraid licence when the software is not much better than freenas anyway.

This review goes into detail why not to use unraid. Not saying it doesn't have benefits but overall it's not worth it especially as you have to pay for a licence.

Skimmed through it didn't seem to go into any detail other than a quick moan about the Web gui font being to small for his old man eyes lol

Either way freenas / unraid and other NAS OS on your own equipment would still be better than this enclosure in my opinion unless your a very basic user and just want a plug and play solution.

By the time you add 2x 4TB WD Reds ~£200 this quickly becomes a expensive option.

You're not really going to get a good idea by skimming through the video. I suggest putting it on 1.25x or 1.5x.

I wasn't addressing your second point at all.
Old pc and do it yourself! Shame the old hp microservers never kept on being updated.
I own this NAS. Wouldn't recommend it unless you have very basic requirements.
Hmm, I want some storage for files that's separate from my PC and in a mirror raid. Should I get this? Or put 2 hard disks in an old computer?

Do you have to buy those specific drives I keep seeing on here?

What can't you do?

Run most apps and services. It's fine if all you want is dumb NAS storage. I'm now looking to build my own UNRAID NAS instead. I've had the WD about 4 years and have outgrown it.

What apps and services?
For me dockers or just anything that needs grunt, I'm not going in to my use case. Yes it has a Plex Media Server app but you'll see unless all your media can be direct played by your client this NAS isn't powerful enough to transcode.

Synology and QNAP are both supported ecosystems with a wealth of apps.

As someone who has used this NAS everyday for 4 years it's one of the only purchases I've ever made that I have regretted. Should have spent the extra money on a QNAP/Synology.

Again if all you need is dumb, mirrored, network attached storage this is fine. If you expect it to do anything else you will be disappointed.
Had 2 My cloud devices - one for myself, one for my son. The software in both gave constant problems and eventually failed catastrophically in a little over a year. Wouldn't touch another.

I had to return it...can and cpu can easily spike, interface was not great too
Can anyone compare this to synology ds218
Noob question, but I configured mine at 2 x 10tb JBODs, and now I want to use it to backup 2 x 8tb separates I have, but using the mycloud interface it just registers the nas as 1 x drive, not 2 hds is that normal? The interface is infuriating! I just want to drag and drop.
