Although there is a new version out soon, this is an excellent price for the original.

Theres now 3 versions of this, the original one which does not have a ethernet port and does not downmix DTS sound, the new Live model which does both and a WDTV v2 which does not have networking but does downmix DTS.

I dont think the new one is actually called v2 but it has been upgraded. I guess which version of the old version you get is pot luck unless you can look at the packaging and see the DTS logo on the front. These however will probably be the non DTS old versions.

Looking at the pictures this is the old old version, I have the HDMI one and it's a brilliant product (paid about £70)

a verrry good price indeed

They all have HDMI. There's a 4th one too called the mini which doesn't have HDMI but that doesn't do HD.

The mini came out after the "HDMI" one.

Again all 3 versions I mentioned do 1080p, the WD TV mini however doesn't.

Doesn't play VOB Files:x

Oh gosh, I assumed this was the WD TV HD not the mini, my bad. Not a great price then. RTFP!!!!

I used to have one of those media players. I now have my laptop directly connected to my TV and I never look back. No problems with any strange codes or odd DVDs.

waste of money, do what i did.... attach a hdmi cable from pc to tv...simples

Not so easy when the two are in different rooms;-)

Can it read from an NTFS format HDD or only Fat 32?

This one doesn't do HDTV nor does it have an HDMI cable does it?

Rather go for the WDTV HD.

please note this has no hdmi connection therefore no hdmi cable. It has less file support for than its elder brother, although the price is ok, your better of spending £20 for the more advanced version, or you could go all out and buy the one with the network connection, I could do with one for christmas :santa::thumbsup:

does this play mkv files?

Needs to have ethernet, 1080p and full file compatability including MKv to be any use to me.

How quiet are these? I'll be looking at the new version with ethernet to replace my aging Xbox with XBMC installed. I am so used to having fan control switched on and the old xbox running almost silently as I stream that even my Sky box is noisier when its fan kicks in. I tried streaming through my 360, but that's far noisier than anything else under my TV and the UI is gash compared to XBMC.

OP needs to update the photo in the first post, as it is misleading and is not the same product.

I'd pass on this one. The regular HDMI WDTV is the bare minimum anyone should have if they want something like this. I will be upgrading mine to the 'Live' next year for DTS down mixing.

No fan, so silent.

Do any of them allow you to connect the 360 HD DVD drive to them?

I've tried it through my laptop and doesn't work, apparently due to the lack of HDMI connection to get round the HDCP protection

A HD player with no MKV support?

No thanks.

This one does not play MKV files & if you look at the codecs it has no support for H264

The WDTV Mini is a complete waste of money.......and the OP should expire it as peopke may buy it in error.

Good spot , photo amended.

i picked up something very similar of ebay for £25, really pleased with it, plays all the movie files i require dirsct from flash memory.

I just plug a flash stick into my Xbox 360 and watch movies that way. Or as someone else says, get a 10 metre cable off ebay for a fiver and plug your pc into the tv. These devices are almost pointless or am I missing something?

People are confusing this with the HD version which has been around a while. It is NOT it would be a good deal if it was but this is infact less functional than a cheap DVD player with a USB connection from ASDA.
This is what you want:-

So because it doesn't suit you, it doesn't suit everyone, correct?

I have neither a Xbox 360 or the desire to have a 10m cable running across the living room to my PC/Laptop. I have the Mk1 version which sits nicely tucked away under my TV, no wires showing no hassle

not soon its already out! This is the min, the 2nd version is the WD TV 3rd one is wd tv live , came out sept/oct 09. mini about right going price now and wd tv is about 60-70.... new live is £100 but sold out nearly everywhere.

How do you connect laptop to TV - which cable will I need (don't have HD yet) and from where do I purchase it?

Why don't WD make a nice 'piratebay' one of these like M$ have done with their MW2 XBOX 360?

Get something better than this trust me i have one and now im building my own htpc so i can get rid of the wdtv.

No 1080p, no hdmi, no ethernet, no mkv or vob support....effectively renders this pointless. Spend another £50 on an xtreamer or playon or get a usb dvd player from ebuyer for £25 (the latter of which has the added bonus of a dvd drive :D).

I just stick a 1tb hd in the back of my blu ray player, plays mkv aswell, can make your own play lists and all sorts and upscale to 1080p aswell

Tempted but think ill wait a while as they seem to be getting cheaper every week ans so many new versions coming out too.

Thanks for your great advice, can you build everyone here HTPCs? Will it use less electricty and be portable? Although not everyone will want to become a slave to technology.

Does the ebuyer DVD player play HD from the USB stick?
I wouldnt call this pointless, its small and portable, why the hell you would want to leave a NAS or computer running 24/7 wasting electricity just to connect this to it when you can use USB is beyond me.
