Decent price for a well reviewd pair of speakers. Description from the Richer Sounds site:

Speaker legends don't get much bigger than the Wharfedale Diamond 9.0.

The original small hi-fi speaker
It's hard to believe that the original Wharfedale Diamond is now past its thirtieth birthday. All those decades ago, it was the Diamond speaker that proved, for the first time, that excellent quality sound could be achieved from a small, budget speaker. Since then there have been dozens of imitators, but the Diamonds remain amongst the best available.

Solid construction
The cabinet isn't just compact, it's also very solid. This combination gives the Diamonds an extremely accurate sound quality as the cabinet doesn't flex or vibrate. Equally impressive are the drive units. A soft dome tweeter gives the clarity and smoothness of sound you'd expect from a more expensive speaker, while the woofer cone uses a carbon fibre type weave to offer extremely taut and responsive bass.

Surprisingly powerful
With a front port, these bass reflex speakers are punchier than you might expect and in no way could they ever be described as tinny. Over all, they may be small but the sound is grown-up, with excellent staging, realism and surprisingly powerful.

Hi-fi connections
It's not just the major aspects of the design that Wharfedale have got right, it's the details, too. Proper 4mm banana sockets will accept thick cable and offer the best type of connection. Threaded sockets at the rear make for secure and easy bracket attachment.

At their original launch price of £100 these speakers were clearly market leaders. Now we're offering them at this bargain price, the Diamond 9.0 speakers are a gem of a deal!

Stereo literally does mean "two" speakers.
Cheap prices & a classical education, where else but HUKD could you get that for free?

Nice sound from these, good price too
How do these sound compared to the Sonos One?

Not that much different in price when you consider an Amp and maybe streamer.

A Sonos One (gen 2) is £199 on Amazon and that's just for one, not a pair. You can hardly compare the two as they're at totally different price ranges.
These will easily out-perform the Sonos if driven by a decent amplifier. If you want proper stereo (which doesn't mean 'two'), speakers like these are the way to go.
Any good with a 5.1 Sony 1040 amp ?
What would these be like as front surrounds in a 7.1 setup?

Should work, but worth checking the Impedance in the Sony manual, as these are 6 ohms.

Perfectly true.
It actually means 'solid'.
Not sure why that's important, but pub quiz trivia.

Not in the original Greek, it doesn't.
Don't know why I'm pointing that out, or why anyone needs to know.
Apologies.
Excellent Value for the Money!

No, it doesn't; it's from the Greek meaning 'solid' because a good system will give you a 3D representation with depth and height as well as width. This from two loudspeakers and uncanny when you first hear it.

I stand corrected
Looking for speakers to sit right in front of a wall. Pm/cd6006 UK edns.

These things will be in Poundland soon. Can't help but think quality is being reduced somewhere compared to when they used to be a good buy at £100.
Do these have a built in amp and what’s the wattage?

They're passive so you'll need to hook them up to an amp of some kind. Rated at 75 watts.

I have old hitachi 80 watt ones. Where can I buy a suitable cheap amp from?

I'm thinking the same here, could move my old cheap fronts to highs and have these on the fronts. I'm sure my setup is 6ohms but will need to check. Thanks for this!

Two Eltaxes that are about 20 years old and two Tannoy Mercury’s that are about 35 years old — they were all good at the time — as well as a Cambridge Audio Minx for centre speaker.

To me it sounds great

The sub is non existent at the moment anyway because the two rear Eltaxes have two woofers in them anyway.

Powered by a Sony AV receiver - the model before the 1080 - but I forget the model number

How about having them as the surrounds?

They are one of the most ethical retailers around and their customer service is second to none.

these speakers are budgets so don’t expect great things. I for one love stereo but also love the Sonos 1. They are fantastic value and two can be paired for a very impressive stereo set
up.

For anyone considering these vs. a standalone bluetooth speaker, I'm using a Tangent Ampster BT II (richersounds.com/tan…tml) with a pair of bookshelf speakers and it sounds fantastic, as well as being much smaller than most amps. Has bluetooth as well as 2 line inputs and an optical input which works with a Google Chromecast Audio. Combined cost of that plus these Wharfedales is <£190, so comparable to a Sonos 1. It just comes down to size/aesthetics. Can't comment on the Wharfedale speakers as I'm using Dali Spektors with mine, but Richer Sounds are happy to demonstrate equipment if you want to listen to them first. Cheaper bluetooth amps are available, but the Tangent gets some decent reviews (avforums.com/rev…025).

Not arguing the ethics of it. Have you ever seen a good deal for an amp? They only discount on speakers.

Yes, I got a Pioneer LX 303 last year for £375 when they normally go for £499.

It’s relative, speaker like these Wharfdales are super cheap and a very old design. They used to stock Cambridge audio products for cheap but they have been developed to a much higher level and now sell for more. The two sub £100
amps by Cambridge Audio look good but the Marantz PM6006UK is the one I would buy. Probably more than your budget but I would buy some cheap speakers to get started and then upgrade them down the line.
