Wharefdale?? Argos own them? Budget speakers budget price!
no they dont.
The Diamond range of speakers actually were always held in quite high regard relative to their price [around the £100 mark] but these 9.0 versions have long since been discontinued e.g.

What Hi-Fi 5 star award in 2005.

There are various incarnations listed here superfi.co.uk/ind…2mA but I believe the 10.1's are the latest.

You'll see lots of awards over the years for the range.

These particular ones actually sold at £20 at one stage so, I'd say not the greatest deal - better off with something a bit later.

Argos/Homebase now also sell crap cheap lawnmowers with the Qualcast name on them, they have recently bought he Habitat name so expect lots more re branded sh*te next year. I think this sort of thing should be made illegal.

I would personally say they are a very good deal, speaker technology in bookshelf speakers changes little. For smaller rooms these would make very good fronts and rears, and even moderate size rooms be good for rears with 9.1s as fronts adding extra weight to bass.

Even if at one stage you could have picked them up for £20, these are bordering on the el cheapo prices of Eltax and are top rated speakers.

My Mission V61 Speakers are from 2005, I love the sound of them and have no intention of "upgrading" them.

These sound awful-extremely dull.I had a set and thought the tweeters had blown as they sounded so muffled but the second set were the same so they went back.
I still use a pair of original Wharfedale Diamonds, which I bought over 20 years ago and still sound really good. I use them in place of a similar size pair of Sony speakers which came as part of a Sony system. The Wharfedales absolutely wipe the floor with the Sonys and if these Diamond 9's are anywhere near as good as earlier versions, then at £39 this is hot!

That's what Wharfedale get for licencing their brand for ****.

Same here. Got a pair of rosewoods diamonds in late 80's ...still going strong ! Also a pair of 8.1's in the office. Wallmounted in a small room, Wharfedales are terrific. It's just a shame they cheapened their name by going into different markets.....I bought an all-in-one Wharfedale mini hifi once and the speakers were dreadful.
As far as 2-channel hifi goes...I don't think there have been great advancements in the last 20 years to be honest..and a lot of CD's made in the last 10-15 years sound crap anyway as they are victims of the loudness war with every sound on the disc pushed into the red zone.

Being discontinued shouldn't really concern anyone. It's not like a computer where newer generally means better perfomance, If anything the opposite is more likely: some of the best speakers you can own were discontinued decades ago.

Anyway, this is hot.

Had some of these when I had a pub, really good set of speakers!
You won't find as good a speaker in this price range new.
Audio noob here. AM I right in saying you'd need an amp for these? I've a computer and an Xbox hooked up to a PC monitor and was thinking of getting better speakers, but not sure I could justifly the cost of this AND an amp.

If you look on Gumtree or eBay you can pick up decent amps for around a tenner. If looking on eBay just sort the deals by distance and get the collection only deals. I'd recommend doing it.

I've got some Eltax C205 floorstanding speakers at the moment, not happy with the quality though. Might get these - can you listen in store first?

Some Richer stores have listening rooms but possibly not all. And in my experience their staff are invariably helpful and knowlegeable.

I think they would let you listen in-store first
The newer model 10.1 speakers are £170. Wharfedale make great speakers. Bargain voted hot! The 10.1 ones are bigger too, not always what people want depending on the use....

I bought THESE for £85 off Ebay, local pickup original price about £750 but they didn't sound as good as my old Snell Ks from the 80s (and they where massive) so I passed them on to my brother. Deff go second hand for cheap amp & speakers.

Hot Deal, I have some of the Old Old Diamond 7.1 Bookshelves and they are super, I might have to upgrade to these tho as my old pair took a bit of a battering at Uni

I have the old Wharfedale Diamond 4's! circa 1990! Still going strong. If they went South I would probably get these. +1

The 10.1s are bigger, as were the 9.1s! The newer model 10.0 speakers have exactly the same size drivers as the 9.0s

Wharfedale throughout the Diamond series have a compact bookshelf X.0 and a bass weightier X.1 series.
I've a set of these. Paid £99 for them from Richer Sounds two years ago. They give a very clean sound, but aren't the best if you like tons of bass.
Heat added just picked a pair up from my local store got them setup in the bedroom, Magnetically Shielded too, sound good enough for bedroom and at £20 per speaker cant complain!
Yeah you can listen in store first. Be prepared for them to demonstrate how much better you can get for £20 more though! That's what happened to me when I went to purchase a set of these last January. Needless to say I spend £20 more... As the difference was night and day. Tho they were still good.

I think you fell for the old Richer Sounds trick... They will always try to sell you something "better" for more money, no matter what you buy from them, problem is though that to get better speakers than these ones you'd need to spend at least £100 more!
dad mentioned he was after a pair of bookshelf speakers, so these fit the bill an absolute treat, he has reserved and will pick up tonight, thanks for posting!
Argos don't own wharfedale, they own Onkyo!! Lol
Can I plug my ipod or laptop in to these?

Not directly, these speakers need a stereo receiver or amplifier or home theatre receiver. They are just speakers, without power, without a cord and need amplification.
I'm still using a pair of Diamond V's I've had for the best part of 20 years. Outstanding sound for a medium sized living room. Bite their hand off at this price - I believe we paid well over one hundred 1993 pounds!

Sadly other British Speaker companies have been swallowed up by IAG too, such as Mission. Still designed in Britain and assembled (like most things) in China.

Because they are still design engineered the same, apart from British pride in manufacturing Wharfedale & Mission still maintain their good reputation and glowing reviews.
