I got a pair of these last year when they were reduce from £450 to £149, they then went out of stock. But they are now back in stock, these are a discontinued model hence the huge price reduction.

If you are looking for a very large pair of floor standing speakers with great performance you won't get better than these. I use them as part of my main home cinema setup and with these you won't need a sub as these really do belt out the bass when needed. They are not just noise makers though and stereo music sounds great on these too, just read the reviews on Amazon.

These speakers match up well with the Diamond 10 centres if you are going to add these to a home cinema setup, I use a Diamond 10CS.

How do these compare to the WHARFEDALE - Diamond 10.4 Floorstanding Hi-Fi Speakers that Dixons failed to deliver on? Any advice much appreciated.

I couldn't tell you how these and a pair of Diamond 10.4's compare directly but I have these running with a Diamond 10CS centre speaker and they match surprisingly well. The Diamond wins for build quality and looks, the Xarus look very plain with very little styling. Sound quality they compare reasonably well but the 10CS has a sweeter midrange a slightly crisper treble but not enough to make it stand out too much. What the Xarus has going for it is a huge soundstage, large amounts of low bass when required and they never run out of steam no matter how loud you go, quality is pretty good too and they never really give the impression of sounding cheap, just the opposite in fact.

If looks are not that important to you and you have the space for them I don't think you will find anything better for £149.99, especially if you are looking for large floorstanders. I am very happy with mine.
Not bothered what they look like but would like good sound which is after all the main purpose of speakers. They seem to have good reviews on google. Looking at your set up you obviously use them for music and television, are they good for both? Thank you for your comments.

Yes I use them for both music and films etc. I use them for music in stereo almost daily and I am happy with them, but I think these will work best with a bright sounding amp rather than a warm one. I have no plans to change them in the near future, in fact I might keep them for life and get buried in one when I pop my clogs. There you go, another reason to get them, save on funeral costs.

LOL don't you start about that, I get enough grief from the in-laws about that. Plants are for outside in the garden, I got enough weeds growing out there as it is without bringing them in the house. Just noticed there is a plant in the hallway, never noticed that before

Hi technoflump,
Nice set up you have. Which model amp/receiver are you using to run these speakers? I don't know if I should go for these or some Mission speakers. Using them with a Sony KDL40EX503U television and a PS3. So much choice and it's a nightmare trying to decide what to buy. Any advice much appreciated.
top deal but isnt this wharfedale's budget range? I'd like a comparison to the diamonds as well, thanks

I am using these with a Sony DA2400ES receiver and they perform very well. To be fair the Diamond series are also a budget range, always have been since the Diamond 1 and they have been very successful because of this. The Xarus range as far as I can tell has been marketed in this country has a DJ/party speaker, probably because of their styling, size, and power handling but everywhere else in the world were marketed more as home cinema speakers as matching satellites, centre and sub were also available but from what I can see were never sold in this country. I have been living with these speakers now for some time I don't think its fair to just class them as party/noise making speakers and probably why they have been overlooked by many, they really are capable of making a decent sound.

Before these I had a pair of Mission 751 and also a pair of Rogers LS7t, the Xarus don't have the detailed mid-range of either of these but they were also a lot more money than the Xarus too, for £149.99 I don't think you will find a better speaker that gives so much.
Thank you for the reply. Did they come with grills/covers?

yes they do but are a real bu***r to get off, they feel a bit flimsy but they are a tight fit so be careful taking them off as they might break.
I have the Q Acoustics 2050 as Front speakers connected to my HTPC and Sony ss-f6000 for the rear speakers also have central speaker unit and a floor bass from Q. I am wondering if replacing the Sony ss-f6000 with these bad boys will make any significant difference to the experience. I use it mostly for movies and 20% of the time on music/xbox

As surrounds you might not notice too much difference, these are quite a bit bigger than the Sony's , I almost had a pair of those but I saw these come up and got them instead as reviews seemed to indicate the Sony's weren't as good as they are a £150 speaker being sold as that but the Wharfedale is a £450 speaker being sold for £150. It will depend more on how these will integrate with your Q Acoustics, I have no experience of that brand so cannot comment.
