Quick heads up that Starting next week the game What remains of Edith Finch is free to play and possibly keep on epic games.

You would ofcourse need to download the epic games store launcher (which I presume you would have done by now to enjoy subnautica or super meat boy (currently running), so you know the drill

Description of What Remains
What Remains of Edith Finch is a walking simulator from developer Giant Sparrow that came out in 2017. It features the titular Edith Finch as she walks through her family’s home and encounters their stories that you play through. What Remains of Edith Finch was praised for its inventive and mechanically infused storytelling that told a heart-wrenching tale of one unlucky family. It originally came out on Steam and PS4 in April 2017 only to come to Xbox One three months later.

You're forgetting that GoG exists, and Humble as well to an extent (given that they offer DRM-free downloads)?

Competition is generally good, yep, but I do hope that they try to compete in terms of customer-facing features over and above the free games. Tying up 'exclusives' and forcing excessive fragmentation isn't good for customers.
I’m impressed so far with these titles they’re giving us

Valid points there mate, presume they are using the freebies to gather some ‘steam’ (pun intended!) before settling down and yes eventually freebies alone can’t do the trick so they would need to do more.
Ooh nice, been meaning to buy this for a while. Not sure I'll buy anything from their store but happy to grab the freebies while they're good.
if only my laptop was good

i'd get this
Awesome, was so close to getting this in the sale for £7.99, glad I waited it out!
Wow cool that they're giving this away for free. Looked unique and was up for many awards
Paid full price and loved it, there is one particular section that had my (and many others) jaw on the floor.
Ok I admit, I kept clicking on the store and being confused and only then saw the start date. Looks good though and needed some heat this morning to keep the frost off my coffee.
Thanks for posting OP , always wanted to give this a go, personally gonna stop buying games unless it's something I really want or is AAA as so many games get given away for free these days

Played this through on PS4, I urge anyone reading this to pick up this freebie and give it 3 hours of your time.

It's a really, really good game!
This is a brilliant game. Snap it up!!!

I found this game extremely slow paced and boring. I barely understood what was going on till half way in. It's probably just not my thing considering the good reviews the game has gotten, but I really don't understand what interests people about this game.

Very nice game. There is an interesting story about each member of the Finch family. I was never bored playing it.
Another free game! Thanks!
Its not free yet lol so in theory its not a deal?

That's cool, no game will be for everyone. I just found the story very good and in particular the game design for the different relatives to be fascinating. Obvious highlights are Halloween and fish cannery! (and the bath).
forgot that Fortnite on the Switch forced me to open an account!

How much do GoG sell compared to Steam? Less than 1%?

Epic really need reviews and a proper refund system to even be considered anything like Steam. Let's hope they all improve.
This was a great game, completed in one sitting.

It seems to be more about fragmentation than competition. I don't think store exclusive games and having to have yet more launchers on PC is a good thing. If Epic were interested in competition rather than trying to carve out a market Fortnite and the other games they've paid exclusivity for would be on other stores.

Fortnite has probably made them no doubt, but that could die off very quickly.
Well worth anyone's play time.. captivating story and amazing visualisations ✌🏼🔥
Boring walking simulator waste of bandwidth, better off just watching on YouTube and fast forward etc since lacks actual gameplay
Doesn't work

Doesn't work

Read the description again.
People hating on Epic launcher because it's partly owned by a shady company are kind of missing the overall point. If Epic launcher becomes successful at all, enough that devs start pushing people to buy their game on Epic if possible because the devs will in return get 20% more money from your purchase instead of it going to the shop which doesn't do much work, then other stores like Steam will also be forced to lower their cut too otherwise they'd lose too many sales. So basically if this is successful, Steam will lower their cut(to even 20% would be a big improvement), and then we can all go back to using Steam AND support the developers more. It'll be the best of both worlds. Steam/Valve is a crazy huge company that earns billions of pounds every year and of the billion pound companies they also have one of the highest profit margins, so there's no need to defend them as if they care about us and devs much.

Don't forget itch.io - much has been made of how much of a cut Epic will take from a sale compared to Valve, but itch.io takes whatever cut the developer decides, all the way down to 0%

It's missing a lot of AAA titles but really more people ought to try using it.

I've never actually bought anything from itch.io, but it is fun to dip in from time to time to try out the quirky, creative little free games there.

itch.io/gam…ree
I usually sign up and install launchers to get a free game then realise i had it on steam all along.
I'll have to wait a few days for this, but I don't mind at all, because I've wanted Super Meat Boy for AGES!!!
Thanks, OP! Heat added.
